0W-40 only?
for the ppl who changes their oil every 5k. do you still use 0W-40 ? the dealer runs 0W-40 for up to 12k miles (service A/B). what's the deal ?

10-30 because it was on sale. 0w is only needed for extreme cold.
Just bought a case of 5-30 as that was also on sale. But neither was specifically mentioned in the manual, so I be taking my chances a little, but heck they're the latest tech synths so likely they just haven't gotten around to testing them (non-mobil1 which is crap anyway). And i plan to change more frequently since it was $1 a quart after rebate. Check you local kragens if you want to go that route, but check your manual first, and search the forum for lots of discussion on that already.

The new dealer-only oil is now Mobil1 ESP 5W40 meeting 229.51 spec. The Mobil1 0W40 is still fine assuming you don't have a brand-new car. I see this oil at Wall'sMart, Autozone, etc.

M1 0W40 has been factory fill since 2001 until MB changed to M1 5W40 (fleece filter) when FSS went away.

Mobil 1 0W-40 and 5W-40 ESP meet M-B’s 229.5 and 229.51 specifications for FSS, respectively. Ensure that your technician installs a Mann HU718/5x fleece filter (V6er’s) and you’ll be good to go on an extended interval until your next renewal.
Couple of links, if you’re inclined, so you don’t have to take my word for it-

My Valves ping at cold startup for a few seconds. Is that normal for everyone else? I use MB1 0W40 with paper filter. Check this out, both dealerships here in oregon didn't know about the fleece filters that my MB is supposed to use. They did not carry them in stock even the parts dept. sell the paper filters for my 05. Is there something wrong with these MB dealers?

Pings and filters

You didn't.
Valves don't ping. You had better head for the dealer for a diagnosis, particularly since your car is still under warranty.
As to the paper oil filters, they are fine if you aren't going 13K miles between changes. If you are, the fleece oil filter is required. And Mobil 1 5W40 EP.
My '01 C320 could go 10K miles between changes but I change it at 5K miles just because it makes me feel good. And I'm using up my stock of paper filters which I won't be using in my '08 C300 which is due in a few weeks.
I buy my oil and air filters, brake pads and so on from www.buymbparts.com in Atlanta much cheaper than the dealer for the very same items.

2005 C Wagon (No snickering please!)
Is everyone aware that the Mobil 1 0W-40 oil has a different additive package than other weight oils? The page in the manual that suggests that other weights may be used in different climates is mandated by government, and will appear in much the same format in other car manuals. You should be using sheet 229.5 oil in your gas engine, and while you can use 229.51 oils, they are aimed toward diesel engines. There is a reason Amsoil, Royal Purple, Swepco and other high priced oils are not used by Mercedes: They don't meet the specification of sheet 229.5. Some people might prefer these products, but I wonder if they also prefer a crankcase full of sludge?
You also need to use a fleece oil filter. Its made of polyester (same stuff as motion picture film) to last up to six times longer and work better than paper filters. Mann+Hummel has a piece that expains the benifits in a non-technical way: http://www.stankoff-bg.com/opencms/e...BAAEJwjOMP.pdf
I don't understand people who feel better changing the oil at 3000 to 5000 miles. When your gas tank is half used, do you dispose of the other half and fill up? Well, Laurel and Hardy might, but only if it was funny. Do you feel funny when you dump your half used oil?

I change mine for peace of mind and because I drive hard. Gas verses oil are totally different.

I called my dealer this morning, and I will be going to get my oil changed this afternoon....They said it wouldnt be more than $87...I'm going to tell them to use the fleece filter...if they don't have it, I'll just get one myself or something...
I figured if I was going to buy all the quarts myself that would be around 60 plus 30 or so if I was going to have a regular shop do it, so it makes sense to just have the dealership do it...I was expecting around $90 anyways...

You may acutually do more wear on the engine by changing it more often. On diesel forums there would be great oil debates similar to this. Folks would send off oil samples for analysis. The result- Synth. oil can easily exceed 20,000 miles. And this is on an engine with a 19-1 compression and 35lbs. of boost. ( VW TDI ) Peace of mind is one thing, but wasting is wasting... I change at the recomended interval, but I also drive 100 miles a day. So take it for what you will, just enjoy the experience.
