auto transmission problem?

over the past couple of weeks i've had an issue with the auto tranny in my coupe. when i park it, i place the shifter into park and try to remove my key, only to find out the key won't come out. i have to put the car back into gear and back into park before i can remove the key.

now the problem is occurring more and more often, and it's not like i've changed my shifting style. i KNOW it's in park, i just can't remove the key. also, now the shifter makes a chunky clicking sound when i put it into park; it's not a smooth shift like the other gears.

any ideas?

Yeah, the same thing happened to my 1993 Minivan. I ignored it at and now the car's gone. It made a clunky noise whenever put into park or reverse.

I say you better get it checked out before it becomes a bigger problem.

My friends Honda Accord had similar problem and they had to replace to whole transmission - covered by warranty.

this is exactly what i'm hoping i don't have to do.

it's covered under warranty but i'm sure the repair will take forever.

Didn't galaxygirl have a similar problem? I think in her case she couldn't get the key in...or something like that.

There is so little of the key that goes in that I don't see how anything could stop it from pulling out.

Key

Most likely, this is a simple problem with the sensor that tells the system that the trans is in Park - unless it gets this signal, you can't take the key out of the ignition.

Yesterday, I accidentally shut down our C240 with the trans in Reverse instead of Park - my first clue to the mistake was that the car wouldn't let go of the key ["why are you fighting me about this?"]. There is an electronic diddly that has to be engaged when the lever is moved to Park - this is probably intermittently failing on the car in question. Leaping to the conclusion that a new transmission is in order is, shall we say, getting a bit ahead of the game...let the dealer do his job...my wagering is that this is a simple problem to fix.
