ok, well i dont know the history of the whole situation here, but Timmy's car is sitting over at the stealership, we buy our mercedes at the same place. Im away at school, but my dad took his CL600 in for service and said he saw a C230 with a blown engine (my dad likes to wander around and look at everything in the back......) thats enough evidence for me, like i said, i dont know the past turn of events, but i think its safe to say this is true...

Eric

tim, that sucks!!!
I have a really good solution though. No 230K engines...Talk to mbusa and tell them you'll pay the difference to drop a 320 or C32 engine in your car.

Timmy,
Sorry to hear about that man, I hope everything gets worked out. The 230 is a great car so hopfully because of some jackass you wont have to drive something different.
SoCal and two.face, you guys are so lame. What a bore it is to come on this site and read your low class posts. Get a life.

Matt

sorry to hear timmy. im with most others in the forum. because the current slk230 uses the same 2.3L engine i dont see what the problem is, unless DMAG is planning on swapping the engine on the slk230 for '04. but still there should be enough in the "stockpile". let us know how it goes!

I don't want to have an opinion whether this story is true or not, but I'm guessing it will make for some guffaws once it makes the rounds over at the Bimmerforums... That will be a shame...

timmy, just settle this and take a picture of the police record and the repair bill.
you have a digital camera.

i'd like to believe your story but i'd also like to see evidence first.

While I won't comment on whether any of the stories are true, I REALLY have to question the method behind how the engine got destroyed.
Ball bearings being sucked THROUGH an oil pump? Not on any oil pump I've ever seen. Have you ever seen the clearances on the inside of an oil pump?
Even so, let's say I'm wrong and there are ball bearings on the high pressure side of the pump.
How the hell would Mercedes diagnose this without tearing the engine down? This isn't one of those "Oh yeah, I've seen this before" type failures. So if they did the service earlier in the week, and the engine was ok for a few days, and you posted this on Thursday afternoon... Seems to me they had to have done the service on Monday, the thing melted down on Wednesday... they towed the thing in and tore it down instantly? Wow. That's service. And they already know the first two cylinders are seized?
Hmmm... it's been my experience that an oil passage being blocked is most likely going to screw up a bearing, not seize a cylinder. Has anyone here ever seen a cylinder sieze on an OEM watercooled engine? Two cylinders at the same time? Seized enough to make the engine go BOOM? I've seen them "smear" on a 4 stroke before, but...
So while the engine may be trashed, I don't think the explanation of how it happened is viable. I'd have some MAJOR issues with any service manager trying to sell me this story a few short hours after my car got towed in.

MB service manager: Hey, Bob!
MB service tech: Yea, Frank?
MB sm: You remember that silver '02 C230 you did the "B" service on earlier this week?
MB st: Yea.
MB sm: The owner just brought it in with a blown engine. Any idea what happened?
MB st: Hmm? Maybe it was those ball bearings I tossed in with the oil. Yea, that was probably what caused it.
MB sm: Okay. Thanks Bob

MB st: Naw, lying is bad and it's against the auto repair association's code of ethics.
MB sm: Your right, we never lie to customers, especially if it could cost us our jobs. So, how do we fix the engine?
MB st: I need to completely replace the block.
MB sm: Gadzooks! They don't put the 2.3 in the coupe anymore!
MB st: Your right! That's becuase they must have run out of 'em.
MB sm: Will a 2.3 from an SLK fit?
MB st: Naw, that's a 2 seeter.

furthermore, the idea that there are no more 2.3L engines is ludicrous. mercedes-benz has an obligation to honor your warranty for 4 years maximum, and blown up engines are of course a part of this warranty. they surely keep plenty of them in stock, or at least the machine tools to make them.
MB does some crazy stuff, but they aren't stupid enough to place a 4 year warranty on a car they don't stock parts for.

An award for Timmy!
Timmy really deserves an award. He has initiated some of the lenthiest and most opinionated discussions on the forum. He shoud be considered for a special commendation--after all, he certainly does get people (including me) involved.
Maybe he could have his own forum to moderate:
Fantastic MB Tales
Seriously, the boy needs to spend less of his parents money on cars and mods and some on finding a good therapist to help him deal with the inner conflicts that drive him to seek attention in this way. Unless, of course, it is all tongue-in-cheek. That is doubtful due to the vehemence of the replies and denials.
It's folks like this that keep folks like me able to drive Mercedes.
