Oil type for c230k?

I've read all the oil change threads and they talk about intervals, but there's no mention of oil type other than it's Mobile1. Can anyone clarify exactly which type of oil? Weight?.....thanks.

I do not have the service manual unfortunately. If anyone has a digital copy or knows where I can access one, that'd be awesome.

Thanks a ton. Drive safely.

mobil1 10w40 semi synthetic.

if its the 1.8 engine, then 5.5 litres is how much you need.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is the oil you should be using in your car.

The 10w-40 semi-synthetic is not MB approved oil, it may damage your engine.

hmph, that was what the service tech at MB Manchester told me to use. Oh well, maybe because of my different climate here in britain?

As it has been said several times (even on this post):

use SYNTHETIC only

There are other oils brands that can be used other than Mobil 1, here is a list but check your manual to find out what Spec you need it is listed as 229.X

yes fully synthetic. i use mobil1 5w40 or 0w40 extended life, the 15,000 mile one. i've added two or three bottles myself since picking up the car in 05.

Thank you everyone for your help. Much appreciated. any more input on the subject would be great. Seems like there's a debate on which oil type.

I just recently bought a C230k from a volvo dealership and they changed the oil right before I bought it, so it looks from the window sticker. Should I assume they knew to run synthetic? If I shouldn't just assume this, should I go get a proper oil change with synthetic even if they did just change it? I have heard that if you're supposed to use synthetic that you don't ever want to have anything else in there for oil or it can mess things up.

The oil for Mercedes Benz gasoline vehicles in model year 2005 is Mobil One 0W-40. The oil must conform to Mercedes specfication sheet 229.5. Mobil One 5W-40 does not have the additive package that allows a one year or 13,000 mile change interval.

Check the oil container, it must say MB sheet 229.5, if it only says approved by DaimlerChrysler or other such verbage and does not quote the number, you would do well to avoid it.

There is also a Sheet 229.51 that has been published by Mercedes, however, it is intended for diesel engines. At first Mercedes thought thses oils to be compatable with gasoline engines, but they have now suggested that the 229.5 oils would be more suitable for gasoline engines (petrol for our UK friends.)

Mobil One 0W-40 is one of several dozen oils approved world wide on sheet 229.5, but it is the only one readily available in the USA.

You must also use the Mercedes or Mann fleece (polyester) filter for the extended change interval. The oil must be full synthetic. Conventional and semi-synthetic oils have waxes and varnishes that will create sludge. Engines run with the correct oil and filter will run 200,000 miles with virtually no wear. If the additive package in most synthetic oils is depleated, or if you use conventional oils, your engine will wear, and the expected life will be reduced.

I can understand why a dealer would sell you the wrong product. They are commission salesmen, and if they don't have the proper oil (in qt bottles) they will sell what they have.

13,000 mile interval?...seriously? So with this $70 oil change it's actually cheaper than with other cars? $30 per oil change x 3 every 3,000 miles ~ $120. Am i understanding this correctly?

I would assume the Volvo dealer changed the oil in their own shop with CONVENTIONAL oil. It's very unlikely they would spend the extra money to put the correct 229.5 Euro formula synthetic oil and proper fleece filter.

That being said, make sure to get Mobil 1 0W-40 (MB 229.5 spec) with the proper MB/Mann fleece filter.

I bought my C230 from a Toyota dealer, and they put in conventional 0W-40 with a cheapo filter. I took my car to a MB dealership the day I bought my car and got an oil change.

When buying a used car, IMHO, I always replace all the fluids, and filters so I have a baseline to work from, if you don't have records.
If you can't be absolutely certain the car has synth, dump it.
You can diy for cheap.
This little baby will suck out the oil pronto for 20 bucks.
http://www.boatersworld.com/product/367400017.htm

FYI- there is no fleece filter for M111.
You don't have to use the Mobil 1 0-40.
And in fact some people feel it's crap, had their oil analysed and the result was just ok to mediocre.
Consult the list posted here....and other places many times over.
The lower number extends the range in cold weather.
I live in california so I don't need 0 weight.

I bought oil filters online for less than 10 bucks.
Oil at Kragens $1 a quart after rebate, yes synth.
Vs. the dealer here in San Jose which charges about 300,
I do it for $17. he he.....

I think I will purchase that pump and do it myself, but my question is will that be good enough to rid the car of all the older oil and I can ensure it's all synthetic?

Also I did a quick search for filters and I am wondering if I want the hastings for the c230k at the top of the list is what I need for an 04 c230k sedan.
