Origins of the "Hump" on '03 Coupes And New Seatbelt

Alright, so I went to my service rep today becuase a part on my door broke and I asked about the hump. Here is the story:

02 owners complained that when they 'crack' open the roof there is a very annoying whistle. This hump will stop that noise. It will be on all new 03's that were produced after a certain date. Those who have earlier 03's will not have them. They can be added afterwards, but I don't have a part #. If the whistle bothers you, go add the part, otherwise, leave well enough alone.

In case anyone is interested my 03 also has a new feature...the seatbelts have a guide/holder to keep the belt in place and help to reach it. This cannot be added or removed, sorry 02's.

Thanks,
Erik

Any chance they were talking about the loud wind buffeting - subsonic rather than whistle sound - that happens at speeds above 30? That bugs the crap out of me!

If it fixes that I'm all over it - can you clarify that for us?

Also - what belt holder? I have an 03 and my belt is a pain to reach for.

Im glad you brought this up. When i went to the dealer i saw over 10 coupes and one of them had a little hump on the top roof, looked like a Xm Antena but much smaller.

Basically since i have a 2003 i didnt get one, and should this be added. Because at 30-40mph with just the sunroof open there is this anyoying wind noise.

Try to find out if thats what its for

Alright, lets clear this up. There are something like 10 new features on '03's that are not in '02's. I don't know any besides the belt and the roof, but the tech said offhand he knows there are more. Here is a pic of the belt. It moves in a 180 degree rotation and the end rotates another 180 degrees. Hard to explain. Please see pics. It is built in and cannot be added (or so I am told).

The last pic is the "hump" in case anyone doesn't know what it looks like.

The pictures of that belt clip thing still make no sense to me. I can't tell how it helps you reach the belt. How about a non-close-up pic (at a smaller resolution plese )

Yuck. What an ugly and inelegant solution to the wind noise problem.

Couldn't they design something that pops up only when the roof is up? Its almost unbelievable that they would just bolt an ugly lump of plastic to the roof to try to solve the problem.

my 96 Infiniti had a very small wind deflector when the sunroof was opened the little spoiler pops up...pretty much std on jap cars....I guess the geniuses at MB haven't figured that out yet...my guess is they never ever open the sunroof when testing a car...therefore they couldn't care less...they're prob all stuffy ole farts that leave the windows/sunroof CLOSED.

What are you guys talking about? The entire front part of the roof pops up when the glass is slid back. This acts as a deflector. Try pulling it down while driving and you'll notice a BIG difference in sound.

I hazzard to guess that this stick on hump is to reduce whistleing when the roof is TILTED. Not slid back as many of you think.

FYI, these seatbelt guides aren't on earlier '03 C-coupes, either. i just bought mine last weekend, and while the model I test drove had them, mine did not. The dealer says he can't add them, either - although it really looked like a simple piece of plastic to me. Oh well...

[EDIT]I forgot to add that I also have the little "hump" on my coupe...

I'll try later...its not that easy to take a pic far away in the coupe.

Its great. Fits really nicely, so it doesn't look too bad. Makes it nice for putting the kid's sand toys and sandy shoes, wet bathing suits, scooters, bikes, etc. in the trunk. Don't need to worry about dirtying or staining the carpet.

If they made that stupid little bump any bigger, it would probably increase the coefficient of drag.

It looks a lot bigger then it really is. IF the dealer did not point it out to me I might not have noticed it.

i know just what you're talking about. it's a really looooow pulsing sound. it just goes right thru my skull! i only get it between say 30 and 50. not there outside that range. the WORST part is right around 40. then it starts to die down.

any solution for this?

Find the part # for the hump...
Order it...
Install it.

OR Sell your '02 and buy an '03 (But I think the first might be easier and cheaper.)

Dude, Maybe you don't have the sunroof in your C320... My sunroof HAS the pop-up deflectors you describe across the entire width of the opening. So, the "stuffy ole farts/geniuses" that designed your car knew of the problem and are up to speed after all. The pop-up Glass panel on the Coupe is a different design, but just not as effective at quelling the buffeting noise.

Actually, I like the little pull tab. Wonder if you can put a Type-R sticker on it?

Actually MB-BOB the little tab is the new version of the tele-aid antenna. Can't anybody see that ?
