M271 - rough idle - the $12 hose
I finally replaced this hose this past weekend, what a PITA!
1. Removing the entire intake is now a 5 min job, easy.
2. Putting the intake back together is a 1hr job, stupid hose down the firewall doesn't line up very well and requires 2 people.
3. The $12 hose was split and cracked. Its made of a rubber that is not oil resistant. How stupid is that?
4. The hose attaches to the engine in the most awkward spot, hard to get tools in there to tighten the new clamp.
A job that should've taken 30 mins took 2hrs! German engineers do not engineer for maintenance!

Craftsman make the clamp pliers for the factory clamps. It has a plier part that controls through a cable a set of teeth that you put on the clamp use one hand to compress and lock the pliers and your done. If your going to work on your own car I would buy these. @ $39.00 at Sears. It will take you 30 seconds to remove and install that puppy after you get these.

MB is aware of another hose that is prone to failure. From a recent issue of StarTech:

The archives tab is worth a search...lots of good technical info.

For the record, the hose mentioned in Splinter's and Mckay's posts refers to the same thing. There is only ONE hose that is flawed, and this can easily be DIYed WITHOUT removing the supercharger. Just look for my thread

Ok so the dealer fixed this hose under the recall on 3/12/08. Yesterday my car starts doing the same thing it did when the hose went bad, rough idle, loss in power, and CEL light came on...oh man...i'm not liking this at all...
