Fuel Gauge Problems

Hey I was wondering if this has happened to other c-class owners. Recently when when I run on Emptry, I go fill up my gas tank, but after 10 gallons the gas pump stops meaning my gas tank is full, but I usually put 15-16 gallons when I fill up my car. The strange thing is even my gauge reports that my tank is not filled, it says its at 3/4 which makes sense with 10 gallons. Which is incorrect the guage or the pump? I am goign to take it to the dealer soon but I just wanted to see if anyone had the same problem so maybe they can fix it quicker.

Could be "air" or air pocket in the tank. Try pulling out the pump and sticking it back in...common problem on older MB's.

I think W203 has a known problem of faulty fuel indicator, mine only shows 7/8 or 3/4 full eventho I can’t fill anymore fuel to the tank cos its full. I think its quite an easy fix for the dealer but I can’t be bothered to take my car to the dealer just to fix this problem, I’ll do it together with service B.

Yes, this is what mine used to show... And it is known to be a common problem with all MB, not only C Class. Take it to your dealer, they should be able to fix it. Mine was fixed early - no reoccurances in over 10 months.

I don't think he's having any problem with his fuel gauge. Here in California the automatic shut-off of the gas nozzle is pretty sensitive (to prevent spilling too much fuel vapor into the air - which suprisingly produces a fair amount of air pollution). I occasionally have the same problem with my car - generally more with the newer nozzles than the older ones with the big external fuel return sleeve.

tifosiv122's suggestion works.

Cheers, BT

This is likely a fuel gauge sending unit problem...

...not only is it common with MB, but all the German makes. They all buy the same part from the same supplier, and the problems seem to go on. Check with the dealer for a fix.

Same problem

Just thought I would add to the subject. I have the
EXACT sample problem as the original poster.
I use to fill with about 15 gallons. Now when
the guage shows empty, the most I can fill
is 10-11 gallons. After filling, the guage only
shows the tank as being 3/4 full.

Of course, this started right after the car was
returned from it's first B service 22,000 miles.

Argh.
