2002 C230 Coupe Power

I have automatic xmission... sometimes when I step on the gas, the coupe amazes me with its power. However, at other times, there's a delay (up to 2 seconds) before the power kicks in and the coupe takes off.
I assume this is because the continuosly adaptive xmission is continuously adapting.

I think it also has to do with ESP. I believe there were other posts relating to this as well.

Try turning off ESP and mashing the gas...

From what I've read on magazines, Mercedes Automatic transmissions tend to have a slight delay when you punch on the accelerator. Here is a qoute from the December 2001 issue of Automobile Magazine (pg. 51) describing the new SL500.
"... the gearbox responds lazily to kickdown..."

You might want to use the manumatic mode for better response.

Still amazes me sometimes when I step on the gas ( on the highway) but seems to lag somewhat in town starting from a stop. What's your experience with auto xmission ?

Jerry,

My experience is identical to yours -- extremely responsive on highway, and slight hesitation in stop and go.

I seem to get the best of this since my wife drives it back and forth to work and I get to play with it on weekends. By way of comparison, my Acura TL's auto tranny is much smoother in stop nad go transition, but the 230K is such a kick to drive.

The delay when taking off is the traction control being overly cautious. If you want to take off quickly, tap the shifter and pick your gear. No delay

Is the traction control doing anything if wheel slip is not detected? Why will picking the gear manually change the way traction control behaves?

So do you mean manually put it in 1st or 2nd and step on the gas to get a quick start with auto xmission ?

Remember, the traction control processor senses wheel spin by comparison with other wheels, it doesn't have the "feeling" that we do, so it notices slip much sooner and prevents it.

When I want a quick start, in my E or C, I just put it in 1st and step on it, no delay. If you want, you don't even need to up shift, the car will do it for you at redline.

Kwik, I don't have the auto, so I'll take your word for it. But, I still don't know why selecting 1st gear manually will change the behavior of the traction control. If the traction control is causing the delay as you say, wouldn't the wheels slip the same way when the gear is manually selected? Maybe the delay that you notice is actually caused by the transmission itself. Just a thought.

sorry, I can't give any better explaination. This is just how my cars work. Maybe, selecting a gear uses a more aggressive algorithm.

Does anyone out there know the actual details of this?
