Major Brake Problem

Had buddy install brakes on my vehicle, and he pulled apart both sides of one caliper. Now I get 2 brake errors, pedal now goes to floor. Will bleeding the brakes solve this problem, or am I in need of new caliper. It doesn't leak, and he definately will not work on my vehicle again. But any info appreciated.

Sorry to say, you need a tow and professional help. Spliting a caliper is not a workshop job. It should probably be replaced because the bolts and sealing must be new to be safe. A proper bleed should restore pedal height. If it has been more than two years since you changed brake fluid, you should have it flushed. If you have used any brake fluid except the special fluid specified by Mercedes, you must get that out of the system.

Brake errors caused by improper sensor installation, or the wrong Pex sensor are easy to fix, but you must have the right parts and know how to dress the wires.

A good brake job should include proper bedding of the pads. Many dealers and independent shops ignore this step, and you don't realize the full potential of the braking system.

Good luck, and be safe.

Before towing off, first pull the wheels & check that all connectors are reconnected, and bleed the brakes.

After bleeding, your firm pedal should return. If it does not, then you've got serious problems - but if you don't see a fluid leak, then you've most likely just got air in the line.

As for the errors, I don't know what sensors MB has in the circuit, but bleeding out the air & refilling the master cylinder may eliminate the errors as well.

The brakes are not much different than on other vehicles (nothing magical), so it's normally not a problem to have them done at a good independent shop (or do it yourself). It's really too early (before bleeding & checking connectors) to determine that you need major repairs.

What happens if you pump the brake pedal a few times? (try pumping 20-50x)

Missing o-ring, where did it go? The o-ring inside the caliper to seal the piston? If that was missing, wouldn't brake fluid gush out the caliper when you stepped on the brake? Did you check your brake fluid level at the master cylinder?

Back to Normal

The O-ring was located on back half of the split caliper about 1/4 in size, wasn't leaking fluid, was just sucking air into system, as I was told by dealer. Bled brakes no problems yet. Price was a steal at $150.

Don't let him near your brakes again. Good to hear you got off cheap and more importantly, alive. Don't know why anyone would take apart the calipers unless you suspect they are in need of rebuilding and have already purchased a rebuild kit with new o-rings and piston dust covers. I haven't done that since H.S.
