I too have that same whine, it almost sounds like the higher RPM's you engine is running, the higher pitched the whilne is. It didn't seem to really effect anything, so I have been just ignoring it.

According to the AC guy at the indy shop, he said the the compressor on my car is particular to the 2005 year. It is a clutchless system, so I take it that the compressor is always on? Anyway, I am about to write a long-winded letter to mbusa.

The thing that pissed me off at the dealer is that the blower was working fine when I showed the SA (not my normal SA BTW). When they called at the end of the day they said that the blower and the relay were bad.
So they replaced it but I still don't understand that they broke the blower and making me pay for it!
I went to the dealership and got my car back for $750 lighter on the wallet, with the same problem that I had (hot air blowing)
I wne t to an independent ac repair place that my bro reccommended and they looked at it and that the part on the front end of the compressor broke and that I indead need a new compressor. The guy is hooking me up with a new oem unit for $495, which is better than the dealer quote of $1000. With the other parts like the dryer and seals, it will come out to about $900, which is far better than the $1700-1900 quote from the incompetent mechanics at Fletcher Jones in Las Vegas.
The dealership would not even goodwill anything to make me happy. They lost out on possibly thousands of potential income as I will never reccomend their dealership again, and I will now only take my car to indy shops.
I will post when my system is up and running again with the final $tally.

Sometimes, I hear a whining noise when I step on the gas. (no not the supercharger lol) It's like a rough whine. It only happens when I have the blower on. Turning the blower off makes it go away.
Also, when I have the AC on, the car seems to shift rougher, and have less power. I have a manual transmission, 2003 c230.

- Compressors all make some noise.
- They all cause a little bit if roughness, rotary better than reciprocating, mainly rotary today, more noticeable with a 4 Cylinder engine.
- Compressors consume some power. The more powerful your engine the less you will notice this

Not sure if they’ll all do it, but it’s compelled me to limit blasts to under two minutes during our oppressive summertime clime.

To be quite honest I have not noticed that but you've raised my interest & I will check - it makes sense - but maybe they only do that on AMGs - let you know

Well, finally got my air conditioning repaired today. The shop put on a reman unit from MB ($800) and with other parts and labor, it came out to $1200.
It comes with a 12 mo/12000 mi warranty also.
I feel like I was treated much better than the dealer, and I chose this shop based on some friends personal experience with these folks.
I am still fighting MB over the cost of replacing the blower and regulator that the technicians at Fletcher Jones Imports screwed up while troubleshooting.
I am so glad to have ice cold air conditioning again, since it is still hovering around 100 degrees for the high each day. It sucked not having a/c for three weeks

How can someone give you a non-bias service opinion when there on commission?
i agree that these ac compressors shouldn't go out so early. I remember the ac compressor in my integra died after 14yrs and 166k.
i'm glad you finally got it fixed.

My normal service advisor does actually help me out quite a bit. He knows that I know cars and can tell him exactally what's going on in my car when AI need something fixed.
The day I went to the dealership with the original problem, my advisor was off and handed off to this a-hole who treated me like a dumb turnip.
My normal SA is trying to get the blower and regulator price adjusted to a goodwill.
