How to attach a spoiler on glass
What's the best way to attach a roof spoiler on the back windshield?
I have a particular one in mind. It's the Renntech roof spoiler. There's a very minimal surface area to mount, so I don't think 3m tape would work. The only areas touching the car is the perimeter. 1/8" all around.
My intention is for the spoiler to be mounted permanently.
I hear silicone gets messy. Is there an alternative method of application of the roof spoiler?
Any and all comments are welcome.

yeah i dont think 3m would work on such a thin mounting surface area
might not fall off, but could easily get ripped off by someone or a car wash haha
i think your only shot is some liquid based substance

If you're really opposed to using the thin very strong 3-M tape, try Gorilla Glue...it's a urethane bonding agent that should do ok on the glass.

Ok, here what you do.
I agree that 3M alone will not do the job. You take 3 M tape and make a thin line around the whole surface of the spoiler so that you have in the middle a lot of space left. Then you go to any body shop and ask for windshield glue. It's not silicon, it's much more thicker and stronger. You put that on the spoilers surface which would be inside the double sided tape area. Then you peel off the double sided tape and mount it on the glass.
Clean the glass surface first though.
I have installed it like this on the following cars:
99 Passat, 01 525i, 03 Acura TL, 05 Benz Coupe, 98 C class.
All of them worked perfectly and you literally won't be able to take it off even if you really try it

Thanks for your help guys. But remember, it's the Renntech spoiler so there's very very little surface area to put anything on. I really don't think the 3m will hold. On a regular spoiler, it would be more than sufficient, but in this case, the roof spoiler minimal surface area only touches the weatherstripping and width of glass.
Gorilla Glue...hmmmm.
SLAMMER111: i heard that the silicone is just too messy especially for glass. Remember the spoiler can be seen from the inside. The underside of the spoiler therefore has to be really clean to be acceptable.
ADVANS: You've got a sweet ride, but your spoilers have much more surface area to mount 3m tape onto. I don't think i'm lucky enough with the Renntech spoiler.
Can you guys tell me more about that windshield glue?

white and whiter
RED 3M automotive tape works fine. just use the wide one. alternative is the black automotive glue if the mounting surface is small. The glue will take a day or two to dry however.

As for the strength of the glue... how long do you plan on keeping the spoiler/car? One big thing for me is removeability, even if it's 10 years down the road.

3M 468 MP is used to mount bumpers on Buicks. It will hold a spoiler on a window. It is thin and clear, wont be ugly inside the car.

I dunno about sedan, but the coupe rear glass has a thick black border like 10-15cm ALL the way around the sides and top, if you are attaching there, you can create a huge mess and nobody inside will see it as the black parts are opaque (and covered by the metal frame of the hatch)
As for the strength of the glue... how long do you plan on keeping the spoiler/car? One big thing for me is removeability, even if it's 10 years down the road.

The problem is that unlike a spoiler on a trunk, the spoiler on the glass exposes itself to inside occupants and me when I look back at the rear windshield. The sedans have a groove of weatherstripping that's black and that's the attachment point for the spoiler, but there's no 10-15 cm area to paste it onto unfortunately.
Removability isn't as much of a concern for me. I'm sure I'll like having it on there.

How about if you made better (secure) mounting points to attach between the glass and spoiler. The spoiler could then be attached to the mounting points?
So it would be Glass -> Mounting point -> Spoiler
Rather than having the spoiler attached directly to the glass?
