CD changer install problems changer not detected and no audio out

hey guys,

the car is a c32 amg with bose and tape deck headunit.

i searched and did everything i could possibly think of after extensive research. I had no problem with removing the center console components. I found the 3 pin black power wire (although it doesnt seem long enough to reach with the changer mounted properly unless there is a longer one i am misssing?). I'm not sure if this is the correct power cable or not... in a picture I found through the search the 3 wires were colored (the cable I found has all black wires and looks to be part of a chain with a branch coming near the steering column. I got the extra fiber optic cable from the trunk labeled SPS IN and SPS OUT.

So I undid one of fiber optic cables from the black connector and replaced that with the same color wire from the fiber optic cable I grabbed from the trunk. Did the same with the other wire to complete the daisy chain for the fiber optic ring. Plugged in the power cable and fiber optic cables into the headunit and cd changer.

There is no more audio out and the CD changer is still undetected. The black connectors that link the fiber optic cables cant be mixed up because they are designed to fit 1 red and 1 white so I'm not sure what I'm missing

Here is a picture I took of the setup

Any help is appreciated. I can also take more pix upon request.

EDIT: I also verified the fiber optic cable from the trunk was working by shining a light through one end and confirmed it came out the opposite.

If you get no audio you more than likely have a fiber issue. Make sure that they are seated correctly in the splice. I can't see what you have found for CD power, so a better pic of that would be helpful.

Is you changer cycling at all? It has to be fiber if you are not seeing it and there is no sound. You didn't by chance break the loop in the trunk did you? Do you have Tele or voice control?

here is the picture of the power cord I found. The tag has a part number as well as SIEMENS on it.

Question: Does the CD changer need to see power for the fiber optic ring to be complete?

Theoretically let's say there are no issues with the fiber optics and I complete the chain but do not plug the fiber optic into the changer end. Should I still get audio out?

The issue sounds like a FO problem but I've confirmed that the wire works with the light test. If I remove the added FO wire from the chain the audio out works fine.

EDIT: changer has no power. should it cycle once ignition is in the ON position regardless of the FO connection?

I did not touch the chain the trunk. just removed the extra FO cable. Do not have tele or voice control

There is only ONE 3-pin power plug. IT might be bundled + taped up from the factory, so feel around and if that's the case, slice off the tape. It will be long enough, guaranteed. (that's the only use of that wire!) If the plug fits into the CDC, it's the right one.

The fiber loop needs to be OPENED and RECONNECTED. This is what your radio is wired to at this point. I am assuming you have the 2-fiber harness that came with the CDC.

= is 2 cables, - is 1.

REST OF CAR ==== RADIO.

What you need to do is this.

REST OF CAR ---- RADIO ---- CDC ---- REST OF CAR

ie you need to pop open the 2-fiber connector (if you look, there's 1 red + 1 white) that was going to the Radio. One needs to be spliced (ie joined) into ONE of the cables to the CDC (RED end of one fiber goes into WHITE end of the other) Then the RED coming out of the CDC goes into the original connector for the Radio. You fit it into the 2-fibre plug, and put the original remaining WHITE one into the other slot in that plug. The 2-fiber plugs are all pointy on one side, just remember POINTY SIDE = RED.

There are only 2 possible combinations. If it doesn't work, switch the cables and try again. If it doesn't work, that means the CDC is actually broken.

To do the installation properly, you need a D2B fibre connector. I have a spare one (bought 2 by accident, you only need 1). Pay for shipping and it's yours.

That looks more like the climate control power cable.

No, if you do that you will have an open ring and you will get no sound.

so assuming i have the incorrect power cable.... would no power to the change prevent audio out? I'm gonna try and dig around more to see if I can find the power cord

EDIT: forgot to mention but there is a single FO cable tucked away by the passengerside footwell that is labeled TEL OUT (red end only).

I believe that you are correct. Did that cable fit in the cd changer connector? I am almost positive that is one that goes to the climate control unit. On the climate control you will have 2 cables going in. The Cd power connector has one angled edge.

The black connector I found does fit the changer and has a beveled edge.

OK, they could have changed the cable on different years. My changer cable had 3 seperate wires going in unlike your ribbon type cable. The climate control cable is square and would not fit.

problem solved. i finally found the power cable after pulling up the passenger side carpet.

So the CD changer does need power for the fiber optic loop to be complete. Thanks for you help guys.
