by that do they mean the shape of the case for the C240 is different than that for the C230?? if they are identical i don't see any complication that could affect ignition since you're using the PCB for your own car.

I just talked to my parts guy, and he tells me that any warrantee replacements go back to MB, which makes sense. But he also said that sometimes people order keys and then never come to pick them up, probably because they found their original, and didn't want to pay for a new one. He's got my name, and hopefully he'll let me buy an abandoned key for a few bucks.

take out metal key.

pull out battery piece.

with small needle nose pliers, grab white plastic thingy and circuit board. Try not to grab too much as the traces can get scratched.

pull straight out.

The white thingy is the pressure piece that holds it in. There is a small catch on one side of the whit thingy that latches inside.

I force pulled and it snapped off - no biggie, now the PCB and the white thing come in and out easily. But you may want to be careful about the pull out to not break it.

-- now the $149 question -- who wants to send me some money to make up for my sacrifical key?

I just tried it on my C230K coupe and it does NOT pop the trunk
My car was delivered July 16, 2001, one of the first delivered in the US, so maybe that functionality was added later??

Hey David, did you feel the 3rd button on your remote control? I am anxious to try mine, my car's in the parking lot...I can feel the third button though (when I press really hard)

I got my car August of 2001, so it's also one of the first ones to come here....can't wait.

a tip

just a tip when pulling your key out, try to pull the little hole on the bottom right side of the PCB (with the white plastic upwards). It makes it easier than yanking it with a tweezer.

I'm not surprised MB decided to leave the feature out...unless they are going to incorporate a hatch lift mechanism, the feature is pretty much redundant and would just be another reason for people to nit-pick at the car.

This isn't too "smart" since there are only a limited number of keys available for each ignition module.

why would they include the electronics in the KEY and the CAR but opt not to give you a way to use it???
This isn't an answer to your question but FYI, I relized last night that the latch handle on the car isn't mechanical. The movement of the handle triggers a switch that fires a solinoid that pops the hatch. The flashing green "help I'm trapped in the trunk" button functions the same way.

I'm not surprised MB decided to leave the feature out...unless they are going to incorporate a hatch lift mechanism, the feature is pretty much redundant and would just be another reason for people to nit-pick at the car.
But they didn't leave it out on all cars. Some coupes came with 3 button remotes. Even though the hatch doesn't lift up upon release, it's still more convenient than fumbling around for the filthy, salty, soggy, latch handle during a snowstorm.

i took out circuit board, and used a dremel tool to shave some of the inside out the part over the extra button. Presses easy now, but the pop doesnt work. I think early 2002 C230's dont have it there.

OK it works. Just stepped out to the parking lot, pressed down real hard, and viola! I am curious as to the responses y'all will get from your dealers. BTW, my coupe was built in Jan 02.

Yeah, young is right, you should hold it down for a second or two. I also noticed that sometimes it doesn't pop even if I pushed hard enough...I think the button may be stuck inside.
