**ticking noise engine** please help

well took car into the dealership today for a ticking noise and the hose recall. SA had the shop Forman take a look at the noise from the engine and told me that the ticking noise is a carbon build up and that I need a carbon flush. Told me it going to cost me $170.00. So my queastion is what is a carbon flush and is this something that has to be done? Also they told me that my supercharger is going out on me but they will replace it under warranty. Will the carbon flush help get rid of the ticking noise?

Thanks for any reply

define the ticking noise a little better. is it only present under a load? carbon build-up could cause detonation/spark knock.

how many miles on the car and what kind of gas do you use?

That sounds like a scam to me. Tell them it's under warranty, make it run correctly or tell them to setup a meeting with the zone rep.

Carbon is a byproduct of combustion. Fuel additives can reduce carbon but gasoline available in the US shouldn't need it. Carbon coats everything inside the combustion chamber and also collects on the back of valves and inside the intake and exhaust ports. Oil in the combustion chamber...like from valve guides on the 4 cyl Kompressor engines...increases carbon buildup. That black soot inside your tail pipe is carbon. A "flush" is putting a caustic chemical on the carbon to dissolve and remove it. I doubt it has anything to do with the ticking noise. Driving habits and poorly maintained engines are the prime contributors to carbon buildup in properly designed and manufactured engines.

All 4cyl kompressor engines make a ticking noise during the first 30-60 seconds after starting but it should go away after that. I thought this had to do with the oil pressure coming up to where it needs to be. If it's the same ticking noise and it's not going away i'd start there. Someone else can give the nitty details but they do tick just after starting. A carbon buildup sounds a little fishy. At 30k miles even the fuel filter is only half worn.

**update**

just picked up my car today. Had to admit the carbon flush did the trick. There is NO more ticking noise. At first I thought the tech was BS me about the carbon flush and just wanted to rip me off I only had a little under 30,000 miles on it. But he was right it did the trick. He asked me where I get gas and type I told Shell (V-Power) then he told me to go use chevron gas. I think the $170.00 was well spent! Also he replaced the supercharger now my car runs Great!

I have a ticking noise as well and it comes from under the hood of course and you hear it louder when you open the hood. But could hear it from inside the car as well. When I asked Mercedes about it they told me it was natural for the Mercedes to do that.... if i remember correctly it was due to the fuel filter or something.

I dunno no problems yet. Just got used to the noise

the ticking I had was on going and never stop until the carbon flush. The only time it should tick is when you start your car but if it dosent stop after about ten seconds then its not normal. the flush really works

It very well could have been a stuck injector.

I had a stuck injector on the old Benz ('87 300TD) that was so bad that I had it towed to the garage, thinking that it was rod knock.

Should have told them to put a Kleeman pulley on when they replaced the Supercharger !
