2002 Mercedes-Benz C230 Kompressor Sports Coupe
I do find it somewhat annoying that they make a big deal that this "sport coupe" is really a "hatchback". Yet in their almost identical length Acura RSX review, the word "hatchback" is never mentioned and the car design is described as that of a true sports car (even though it is FWD). There seems to be a bias of some sort here.

i think the issue is that mercedes is saying its a sportcoupé. i mean, acura's been making hatchbacks forever so its not a big deal. a lot of reviews i've read seem to mention this nomenclature issue... maybe they all went to the same 'how to write an article' seminar.

personally, i don't think its that relevant... as a consumer, i don't care what its called but the marketers probably do. my nissan 240sx was called a FASTback! whoo hoo! it was FAST and RWD!

Yeah, they do seem to be all over Mercedes for calling it a coupe. Although in my simpleton jargon any two-door car is a coupe, whether it has a hatch or a trunk. I don't think MB is really pulling the wool over any one's eyes regarding the hatch issue - obviously the things a hatchback, if it had a trunk it would be a CLK . I don't recall the press being worked up about the BMW 318ti not having the word hatchback in it's name. Most other countries appreciate the flexibility of the hatch format, yet the C-Coupe is called the C-Coupe all over the world, not just here in the US where hatches are a dirty word - perhaps MB should have just added some more letters to the name and been done with it. CCK 230, i.e. C Coupe Kompressor - but then again maybe that wouldn't have been such a good name either .

Cheers, BT
