next mod: lowering springs

ok.. i've decided. i am not spending another dollar on the car until i raise the money to get lowering springs. i have had h&r springs before - my personal experience was they sagged. so i am leaning towards the eibachs (had good experience with them on my eclipse)

i am in so. cal. (SFV) who has the best deals on the eibachs?

who should i go for installing them. i want to be sure the shop has lots of experience lowering c230s.

thanks for your help.

a rice rocket is a term we use for japanese cars, my customers usually use eibach for japanese cars and H&R's for the germen cars....

for those who have installed either one of those springs, has there been any problem with the 4MATIC??
cause my friends told me that its not a good idea to lower the 4MATIC...
also, if i buy one of these springs, do i still have to cut it to make my benz low??

marshall....i haven't heard of any problems with lowering the 4matic...how ever i have heard problems when replacing the wheels to a staqggered fitment...such as 19 x 8.5 front & 19 x 9.5 rear...i have heard that this may throw off the computer in the 4matic...but no problems with lowering the car.....i do not suggest cutting of any spring...it can cause safety concerns as well as unwanted noise...just go with a set of H&R's...

Worse Mileage on C240 4Matic than on C320?

Strange.... the loaner I have gets much worse mileage than my hard driven C320.

Any ideas why?

Doesn't anyone who gets a 240 4matic deserve bad gas mileage?

I know that the 4matic system is heavy; that could be a substantial factor. Well, that and you doing left-foot-brake burnouts, of course.

Trust me, on this car, that is an impossibility!

Thumbs down

On my C320 with aggressive driving I usually average 25 - 26mpg over a 70 mile trip.

On the C240 4Matic I average 22.5 - 24mpg.

Some cars get worse mileage with a smaller engine. It has to do more work to get the car moving as compared to a larger engine. The increased weight of the 4MATIC system only multiplies that effect.

Indeed.
I might mention as well that the C240 has just about 3200 miles while my C320 is >30k miles so well broken in.

2003 C230
FYI

I drove a loaner C320 Auto for a whole week. Never got past 22.5 mpg in mixed-mode driving. My C230K Sedan gets about 27.5 in the same loop (commute to work). I've hit up to 31mpg on the highway on my C230K and about 25mpg on the highway with the C320 but when you start mixing some city traffic the C230 comes out ahead.

CZ

p.s. One surpising thing is that as temps go up here in CT, my MPG is going up as well.

No mystery here, folks...the gearing on the C240 is much shorter than the C320, to give the smaller engine more snap off the line and more punch at highway speeds. The result is higher fuel consumption compared to the C320, and for that matter, to the E320...both of these cars have more relaxed gearing that lowers fuel use.

Our C240 consistently does 20-21 mpg in our suburban running around, and 27-28 mpg on long trips...this has been consistent pretty much since the 5k mark. You can see the high teens in strictly city driving.

By contrast, our E320 easily topped 30 mpg on its very first long trip, well before the engine was broken in, and I would say generally averaged 2 mpg better than the C240 under identical conditions over its life in our garage.

It's all in the gearing - the C240 is turning 3000 rpm at 70 mph.
