not much but got the Kleeman K23 alloy pulley kit...oh yeah and 15mm spacers in

Hi All,
After owning my car for about two and half month i decided to get a Kleemann alloy pulley kit (crank and accessory pullies). The kit is very nice quality and comes with instructions (although a bit misled). When I took it to the shop for install they originally quoted $150 but after seeing that the auto tranny require getting an impact air tool (so you have to remove the radiator fan). Well you cant just remove the fan easily, you gotta move all the brackets around it and a few things (glad didnt have to take the radiator off). Anyhow, it ended up taking them about 4 hours for the install and final cost was $200 (I dont consider that bad but I KNOW i'll get flames from many do-it-yourselfers so go ahead). Anyway, I dont really have a place to do a full run so will try it tomorrow (i'm told ECU takes a while to learn the new boost anyhow). I also decided to wait until next weekend to get the dyno (with A/F ratio) to make sure I get full potential of the pulley kit.
Also, finally got my 15mm H&R spacers installed. They look nice but now I wish I had gotten 20mm as they are still a tiny bit tucked in (the rims are 17x8 in case anyone wants reference). I think if I had 20mm spacers the front and rears will have about the same look.

Nah, you won't. Only the ones that have all the right tools and don't have to buy them. And then it'll be in good fun anyhow.

If the air/fuel ratio is measured with a probe stuck into the exhaust pipe, it is worthless except for passing an emissions inspection. The correct A/F ratio can only be measured before the catalytic converter.

yeah i spent about 2 hours reading posts from you, Buellwinkle, Kleemann, and Brad/Ben at Evosport..............funny and informative stuff. I was thinking since I had A/F ratio measured while stock (dunno if it was at frist o2 sensor or tailpipe) I figure I'll do it just for comparison sake.

If the installation was done properly for an automatic car per Mercedes shop procedures, the radiator fan doesn't have to come off. Technically for an automatic you're supposed to have a special tool from Mercedes that locks the flywheel in place so you can properly use a torque wrench to get the bolt to spec. Using an air wrench is a crude way to do it, specially on an alloy pulley but that's the way Kleemann does it so I guess they'll warranty it that way. BTW, I've helped Linh on his car and he's taken off the radiator fan several times and it takes him about 10 minutes, just a few clips and it's off. Some shops just don't have the sharpest mechanics, too bad they charged you extra for their incompentancy and lack of the correct tools.

I don't think they warranty it unless it is installed by one of their shops. Taking it to your own shop or doing it yourself means no warranty. The ones that people do themselves are the only ones they ever have problems with.

Buellwinkle,

I was wondering if you could give me some more info about removing the radiator fan (or give me the link to a post). My ASP pulley is arriving soon and I'm planning on doing it myself. (Auto)

Excellent tberry, thanks for the info.... I've been searching for perfect spacers for 17x8 to make the wheel sit flush... seems like everyone has 18's...

[i]Some shops just don't have the sharpest mechanics, too bad they charged you extra for their incompentancy and lack of the correct tools. [/B]
Buellwinkle...i know i know but its really supply and demand. The shop is called Carboy (they're pretty well known in Jap Import world) and I normally wouldnt take mine to Jap import shop but through a few years of getting to know the mechanics (funny the shop owners and the mechanics all drive MBs) they're pretty nice guys and does good work (will do whatever it takes to fix it right). To me $200 was the right amount for the job being done. Now the dealer asked $1000 for Renntech spoiler+install+paint and I dont think its the right price i'm looking for (I'd think $600-700 I'll do). Its really up to ppl (same thing with the pulley....Lee stated 6weeks and I needed/wanted it in a week....Kleeman had it for the price I can live with.

tb, what size lugs did you use when you bought the spacers?

I have 17x8 35offset rims with 15mm H&R spacers. The bolts I got (finally after 3 tries) were Gorrilla (spelling?) 1.5" bolts (acorn seat type b/c most aftermarket rims require acorn seat and most OEM such as MB use ball seat). I'll check the box again when I get home if you like. I just ordered mine from Discount Tire at $1.50 a piece.

*Although again if you're getting 17x8s be sure to go for 20mm spacers as 15mm still seem tucked in.

So did you get the dyno done yet? What does the 'butt-dyno' say about the pulley?

Thanks!

its been raining in Houston and cold so roads are slippery and havent really had a chance to gun it yet (I'm driving mostly in W mode). When i push it a bit hard in the higher PRM you can hear the suprchgr whine even inside the car with all windows closed and it sounds mean....hopefully i'll get a chance to do some G-tech runs and a dyno this weekend. Couple of us in Htown are trying to get together to do a track meet as well so we'll see (as for the quality of Kleemann pulley its very nice and everything work great together. Their customer service is/was great and I'd definitely do business with Evosport again. If you can't wait for a new ASP pulley 6 weeks its great)

Hey Tberry,

I was wondering if you ever got your ECU setting changed to stage 2 or not? Or are you planning on just running stage 1 with the new upgrade?

regards,
matt

Yeah, I love the sound that it makes. Actually I like it best with the windows closed and everything else quiet in the car. It sounds good that way. You should try it for a short time without the air filter on, or try a K&N cone. It sounds even louder then and you can hear the bypass valve when you lift from the throttle.

Matt, no after reading ALOT of the posts and contacting Kleemann and doing some research apparently IF a lean condition occur then u should go change fuel setting to stage 2 but while u eliminate lean condition you lose about 10hp as well in the process. I am not pushing the car but but enough to allow the ECU to learn (WOT is where lean condition occur apparently). I will be getting a dyno this weekend with a/f ratio and compare it to my stock dyno from 3 weeks ago....we'll see how much as changed then...will keep you guys posted

I am at stage 2, but at one point I went and changed back to stage 1 to see if there was a difference. I did not drive it very far like that, but I couldn't notice a power increase. So I put it back at stage 2, just to be safe.
