Ended up replacing the sprockets. $4950 for parts and labor + about $340 for rental car for 10 days. They were not in too bad shape, that's why CEL was coming on and off, but the process has started as you can see from the picture and eventually I could face even bigger troubles.
hey everyone, just finished reading all 15 pages, seems all helpful and clear, before ordering parts to this job my self with the help of this forum , want to double check if I'm getting the parts numbers correct for the code P0015 I got
Part #2720510177 X4 of them , from parts dot com is at $22.50
and I also got the code P0128 (coolant temp below thermostat regulating temperature)
I bought my C280 w203 2007 a day after christmas. I drove it for two day's and got a "Check Engine" light, took it to auto zone and got a code P0015 I read around this forum and it said it was probably just a magnet. Got the magnet replaced at a shop and it was $100, drove it for two weeks and light came back on, took it to a dealership and told me that the timing is off and something is wrong with the camshaft, lower control arm and also some wire harness... so now I have a car that I haven't even made a first payment and I have quotes on things that need to be done that add up to $7000 :O what should I do? any advice? I contacted MB and they are only willing to help with 10% off the cost :/ unfortually my vehicle is out of warranty, I called the dealership where I bought it and they are just avoiding me and said I should of taken my car to a mechanic before I bought it and it was sold as is with no warranty... I'm in a really tight spot.
finally got a chance to install the 'magnets" was easy to install the passenger side ones, im having issues to get access to the driver side, cant access the screw to loosen the PS reservoir , idid remove the cap and the screw to the right , how about removing the oil filter area one ?
tools used / needed E-Torx socket and a T-30 socket
I used 12-point box wrench, if I remember correctly, it's 1/4 inch size.
thanks everyone for the tips, I bought 4 new ones from a dealer ,replaced them 4 no check engine anymore, passenger side was easy with help or Torx set and driver side was bit more time but was easy with using box wrech , have a magnet near by incase a screw falls in the working area.

Oh snap! I just ordered the magnets because I got both P0012 and P0015, and assumed that I have the old/original parts. I was under the hood just now getting the lay of the land before I swap out the magnets, and it turns out all 4 that are on the engine now are the new part # - 2720510177. Should I not replace these? Should I look into replacing the position sensors instead? Or could it be that even these new parts go bad after a few thousand miles? I currently have 38595 miles on my 2010 GLK 350.

Oh, for a little background... we bought this car used in August of 2014 with about 25000 miles on it. The car has always been driven in South Texas. We didn't start seeing the CEL until we spent a week up in Iowa, where the temps dipped well below zero nearly all week long. Since then, I got the CEL cleared (it was a P0015 then), it stayed gone for a few thousand miles, then came back (P0012 this time). Could it be that the 25000+ mile o-rings on these magnets could have been damaged by the extra cold temps? I don't know... I'm just speculating here, as there's a bit of oil residue around two of the sensors and magnets. I'm just a little disturbed with the fact that this updated part is supposed to resolve this issue... but I'm already running with the updated parts.
A few days ago my engine light came on then turned off and when I got it checked by the mechanic, a P0012 stored fault came up; continuous camshaft adjustment (RIGHT): Incorrect position of intake camshaft (P0012).
So, I removed the four camshaft sensors and checked the position of the camshaft 'timing markings'. The left bank inlet and exhaust, and the right bank exhaust markings were centered but the Right bank inlet timing marking was slightly off centered, in comparison to the others but the full circle was still visible.
I'm not sure whether this means that it will lead to the infamous camshaft problem that will need eventual replacement, or if this is a problem due to something else.
I would greatly appreciate some help on this problem. Incredibly distressed over this problem .
GLK350, you should not be seeing any of these M272 engine issues with a 2010, most you VIN or Engine number and we'll check to see if it within the effective range.

Any update, seem to new to have the balance shaft issue, but without the VIN number can't check.
So I have a 2006 E350, CEL came on the other day, I scanned it with my own OBDII and got P0015 and P0128. I decided to take it to MB dealer. They told me I need to replace the magnets and the thermostat. Ordered the new Magnets and thermostat. Replaced the parts this morning, drove it for may be 5 miles. The CEL has not turned off yet. Wondering if I just need to drive it more or what should I do?
Thanks

I just had the P0012, intake passenger side for my V8 model in the 2007 S550. I replaced the camshaft magnet deal. It was behind the bracket which holds the front/top engine trim panel. I took the bracket off with three screws. Pretty easy. The other three camshaft magnets look pretty easy to get to on this car. If I get another code for one of those I'll switch it out then.
I didn't test the strength of the new part's magnet, but the old one is pretty weak. It can't even hold a paper clip. Is that normal?
They are electromagnets, ie current must be flowing through the windings to create the magnetism. When unplugged they won't pick up squat.
I put a 12 volt connection to the magnet, solenoid. I guess the purpose is to move the little plunger with the rolling ball forward with resistance so it can roll on something.
[QUOTE=ohlord;2851560]camshaft position sensor. You would have real problems if the cam was over retarded.
Is it running fine? Are you under warranty?
ohlord
its not not that bad it's common with this car make and model , it's like a $30 fix

Nektopoli,
I apologize that I didn't see your question from over a year ago... ha! We've had other problems with this engine as well. Probably just a bad egg. However, here's my engine number, if you don't mind checking it out for me: 272991 31 376867
I have replaced all 4 camshaft magnets two years ago on my C230 2007. The P0012 (exhaust bank 1) just came back this week. Should I replace the magnet again or the camshaft sensor?

I'm no expert, but I understand the new magnets only change the tolerance window. So if the errors are back, you're getting more slop. Ask around, but prepare yourself for bad news.

Thanks. I'll try to replace 2 magnets on bank1 and see what happen. Hope it is not the beginning of the balanceshaft.
