Hello all Newbie here!! First off thanks for all the info from Glyn and John!! you guys are awesome!! I just bought a 2006 C230 sport two weeks ago. CEL came on today and I freaked at the thought of the balance shaft belt problemo. Got OBDII code P0022. So after reading this entire thread I learned that its not a cam sensor problem but a magnetic adjuster problem. Went to MB to get the updated version and replace all 4. Cost me $22 bucks a piece since I get a discount for working at Autozone. After studying this thread I was able to do in the autozone parking lot in about 45 minutes. I hope this works I cannot afford a $5000 balance shaft problem. cleared the code and my mpg went through the roof averaged 26 mpg on the way home! Is that a good thing? I was kinda worried that I still have a problem. I guess the CEL will tell with time.

You will be just fine. I had the same issue when my CEL came on and my mechanic mentioned something about the balance shaft. I replaced all 4 magnets and the problem disappeared forever....until I totaled the car last weekend that is

Hi all, I have an 06 R171 (SLK280) with P0025. After reading this thread from beginning to end, I ordered the revised solenoids (A 272 051 0177). Since it will take about a week to receive them, I was wondering if I can drive the car while the check engine (P0025) is still on? Is it safe?

V

P.S. I also want to thank John, Glyn and everybody else that chimed in with useful information.

You can safely drive the car. Fuel consumption might be slightly up & performance slightly down.

Thank you Glyn. This is good to know. To me, the car runs fine and I did not see any changes since the Check Engine light came on. I will probably see the difference after I replace the solenoids.

Hi all just a quick update to say all is well and my faith in mb is restored I had the low oil lite come on a couple more times so a 50 dollar part from mb and a little dirt in the eye dropping the oil pan and all is well, the old float, gauge was very grimy I'm wondering if the owner before me ever changed oil and maybe that was why the balance shaft gear was worn so bad maintenance is important

different codes

I have read this entire thread from start to finish and appreciate all the advice. But I'm having a slightly different issue.

Last month my 2007 C230 was running bad and I pulled the code and it said the MAF was bad. I replaced it and the car ran like a brand new car again.

Last week I was pulling in a gas station with the car running just fine and in a split second it was running horrible. CEL came on and the exhaust sounded like a $200 VW beetle. The code I'm pulling however is P0391 and P0366. I bought the camshaft sensors prior to finding this thread and they didn't fix the problem.

Still have same crappy sound, no power and same codes. Do you think it is the magnets>

Update for anyone that might be able to help....

I replaced all 4 of the Camshaft Magnets. Still same exact problem, except might be a little worse now.

My diagnostic tool is pulling the P0366 and P0391 codes. But I decided to run over to autozone and see if they pulled the same codes. Well they pulled 5 codes instead of just the 2 I was pulling.

They pulled:
P0366
P0391
P0016
P0018
P2004

I just ordered all new camshaft position sensors, crankshaft sensor and a new thermostat as well. I'm going to replace all of those items and see if that changes anything. Oh an a fresh oil change can't hurt.

Big Mike I'm sure not the one to give advice on this but I'm sure that Glyn or one of the guys in the know will be able to answer the codes but take a minute after you change oil and dissect the old oil filter, cut it open from the top down one side and it will pull apart like an accordion, check it for metal fileings. It might give some direction if you find any.I hope there is none

So I now have a new MAF installed, all 4 new camshaft sensors, all 4 new camshaft magnets and a new crankshaft sensor installed.

Still pulling the same codes, same sluggish power and the exhaust sound is worse. and now the car sputters and trys to stall at complete stops.

ANYONE GOT A CLUE???

Did you find any metal on the magnets or cam sensor? If not then I would spend the 100 bucks and let MB scan it and give you a quote.Just my 2 cents worth.

How do I know if the VIN of a 2006 C230 falls with in the range of effected defective balance shaft sprockets (P0016 & P0017)?

ENGINE DOES NOT WANT TO START

Good day

I drive a C180 2003 or 2005 model but the things is that my engine light went on the Friday and the Saturday the car never want to start.

I had a engine diagnosis done on the car and the results shows that the problem show a codes:P0341 and P0336

Can anybody please tell me what this mean?

P0341 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P0336 = Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

I would replace the crankshaft position sensor (down the back of the engine) first. This will cause hard or no starting.

Then cancel codes & see what comes back if anything.

Hello

Came across this discussion on a search and read though the whole thead.. I am getting a p0024 code which is different from what other posters are getting and I am wondering if the magnets A2720510177 replacement will help me in getting rid of the code? Much thanks to all your help.

Just want to give up a THANKS! to John and Glyn (and the guy with the 1/4 wrench tip) for sharing the knowledge.

My sons new to him 07 C230 has a CEL and showed P0012, P0022,and P0025 when I checked the codes. I'll order up 4 of the magnets, get them changed and report back after a bit. But, having read the thread I am confident it should put it behind us.

It had a P0420 when we first got it. We changed some FILTHY air filters and it hasn't come back as of yet. But, with slightly over 100k I know the cats are on borrowed time.. No rattles or smell so just hope they last until we get through all of the other new used car expenses.

Thanks again.

Can anyone verify that this is the right part before I make an order?

EDIT- That is the correct part. I went ahead and paid the convenience tax and picked 4 of them up at the local dealer. Parts guy said "Oh yeah, we always have several of those in stock."

I'll get them changed and report back after a while.

Just a follow up for those who eventually have to do this.

We replaced all four magnets/solenoids the other day and it went fine.
A few tips based on our effort.

You can do the whole thing with a small 1/4" 12 point box end wrench and a very small flat tip screwdriver. The bolts just need the tension broken and then they can be spun out with your fingers. And I have large hands. Just be patient and always ensure that you are square on the bolts that are hard to see.

The electrical connector plugs locking clips can be brittle with age so be gentle when lifting/prying up the grey locking tabs. I found that they needed a very slight bit of help off from underneath with the small screwdriver as well. But, that is possibly due to my adversity to tugging on the wires.

The small screwdriver was also of use to pry a wiring harness clip off its mount as the wiring runs against the sensor near the PS reservoir (silver clip). It was also useful to scrape and clean the dirt away from the magnets before you pull them. You need to do that and blow them off as the dirt can easily fall in when you pull the magnets.

You DO NOT need to remove the oil cooler or PS reservoir if using a small 1/4" wrench. I did find that I needed to pull the corresponding hall sensor for the one behind the oil cooler as I couldn't slide it out. But, it is only one extra bolt.

Umm.. Not much more to it. I lubed the o-rings with some oil off the old magnets. Don't over tighten when you put the bolts back in.

Thanks again.

Replaced mine. All four. Resolved my check engine light issue.

PN for Magnets
272-051-01-77 $31.63

Big thanks on the 1/4" wrench trick. Saved massive amounts of frustration! When doing the one behind the PS fluid take the cap off and it will slide right out. I did it the slightly longer way and took out the adjacent sensor.

Cleared codes.
Staying off so far.
