I can totally relate to your fustration.... at times one thinks of that old cliche "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". You and me are in the same boat. Trust me here, play around with the options, icons, avatars, signatures, etc. and once you get the hang of it you will like it much better. I am not computer literate so it took some time to figure out where things go.
Use the Test Forum, its a great place to mess around and no one will say anything about what you are doing in that Forum plus you can try out all the extras that this great site offers.
Good Luck

Don't worry, you will learn to love these forums and won't even beleive you used to like the old format.

This new format has a lot of new features, it is much more organized, and just overall much more user freindly.

IMO, it's less user friendly since it has a flat structure vs. threaded structure of the "old" one, whch is its main drawback since this is not a simple bulletin board but discussion board which implies multiple lines of discussion under the same main thread. Yes, I agree that is has some nice features, but they are not important to me, except the ability to edit and withdraw posts, which is great.

My only complaint about the old system is that it didnt put discussions where new posts had occurred to the top of the board. But I find the "show me all thats done since I last came here" and the "email me when someone posts" features of this board making usage very easy for me.
