1/2 quart per 1000 miles seems a little high. My 14yr integra with 168k on it never burned oil unless i redlined it to 8200rpms a lot.
I just did my oil change and i still had 7qts and spilled another quart on the ground when my pump broke. I drove my car for 9k before changing it.

Well, just got another ... I dont even know how to call it.
The saga continues.
The whole day car was sitting in the driveway, All i did was took off the throttle intake pipe off and put it back to check for presence of oil in the intake.
20 mins ago I get into teh car, turn the engine on and suddenly BANG, BANG. I thought i blew the header off, swear. But no, it was just a wire cutter laying around. I never had this thing, its not mine. Guess the only way how it got under the hood is some MB technician left it there. And while working in the morning I disturbed it from a stable position. Now i am not even sure what it could have hit and damaged. One thing that I saw was snapped clamp ring on teh intake pipe, but I probably should take the blame for it as i could possibly over torqued it. BUT HOW THE HELL WIRE CUTTER ENDS UP FLYING UNDER MY HOOD???

BTW, for the original post....maybe check if you really are draining everything out. Even after the machine starts making chugging sounds as if no more oil is left....let everything rest for a minute...have a beer or two...then another beer or two....then try pumping again. Just a thought though.

Maybe I dont get something.... 15 years ago i had a 12 yo pontiac with 200K miles on V6 engine, it burnt 2 quarts ever 3K miles. Now 3 yo Mercedes with 45K has the same standard. Is there somethign wrong with my perception or it is because the car is still under the warrantee and checking/fixing this would be too expensive for the dealer?
How can you compare a Pontiac to a Benz, that's wacked. The Pontiac is going to be a very solid car you can keep for a long time without much problems. Even if you have a problem there will be many times more mechanics that can work on and the parts will be cheaper. The Benz scores much lower in reliability than a Pontiac in JD Powers long term reliability surveys for a reason. It's like me trying to compare our 98 Mustang to our 98 SLK, wow, no comparison, the Mustang is built like a tank, nothing ever breaks on it. The SLK is like a mechanics dream, taking it in next week for head gasket, don't even ask me what that cost but lets just say I can get the Mustang engine totally rebuilt for the same money.
BTW, our C230K and SLK230 do not use any oil between 10 mile oil changes.

alex anyways are you gonna be in port today? do you want to give me a hand on replacing my fog light bulbs?? i have no lift so its a pain to do.... and i dont want to wait
my set of 25k yellow fogs just came in yesterday

Few days ago went to look at 84 SL380. The car is rusted junk, but the engine is all different story. The v8 has so much power and runs so smooth i would never believe it has 280k miles. 2 decades ago MB could build good solid cars. That was old generation of designers and engineers

Dont often get to hear about blown gaskets on these cars.

Haha, I think the opposite, I think MB's are much better now than 20 years ago. I had 2 W201's, first one taken back the first year of the lemon law in 1984, the second one, the replacement, needed a transmission and radio in it's first week. Look at the way you even think, you are impressed that a 20 year old car runs, heck, look at all the 50 year old American cars still running shiny or rusty. My daughter's friend's father had a Mustang with over 300K miles, never needed any major work.

Yeah - I remember when Chrysler's Valiant was the best selling car in South Africa. My Mom had one and loved it - '65 V200
**** fit & finish which still plagues American cars but - crude, simple & run forever !!!

In 84 i was in mid school in russia. Then we didnt even know what cars existed. Well. times change and we change a lot. Every time I visit Russia i get more and more impressed with all those cheap Fiat clones from early 1970th that still run the streets along with most modern european cars.

There's no way a MB can burn that much oil and be in spec! I'd expect the car to not need topping up between the oil change intervals!
Personally I'd raise hell with the SA. What if you didn't know what "Add 1.0L oil" meant on your display, and decided to just follow the "xxx km before next service" screen like most laypeople (such as my mother and sister) would? If a bunch of engines blew up I'm sure MB would be looking at a class-action.

SA's are glorified sales people. They make commission off the services you purchase. I take their words with a gain of salt.
Another reason why this site is so useful, so you can become educated and know what you really need.
My SA tried to charge me $1k for two seat control modules and install.
I did it myself for $150 and 1hr of my time. 1hr because i didn't know what i was doing the first time.

Yesterday had few phone conversations with NJ headquarters.
Interestingly enough they really have official allowance number, which is....
Hold you pants, its one quart for every 735 miles. My SA has much better standards than the rest of them
OMG, that car would never pass emission control, looking like a coal power plant. I dont know what those guys at MBUSA smoke or maybe they sniff their exhausts, but at least their response to the complain was quick. Now I have to bring car back to dealer for another inspection.

That's amazing - I'm assuming this is engine dependent? Had to go do the math, but that's basically a liter per 1000km - seems insanely high to me, and my C200K has had zero added in the last 4k miles and is saying it's perfectly happy!

That harder you drive the more oil it burns. Racing the car will burn over 1 qt every 500 miles due to heavy use.
Your car sounds about normal! Most people just dont notice that less oil comes out after a change than goes in.

My E350 burns about that much oil, my SL55 does, my S63 burns 2-3 quarts every 3-4k miles and asks for extra oil once or twice between 3-5k mile oil changes.

Honestly, I must not drive my cars hard enough. MB's recommended service interval is 10k or 1 year, right? Basically if you are doing a quart per 1k, you are constantly changing your oil.. And yeah, I realize that's not really true, but damn, that just seems high to me.
I did 1.5k in my 350 last month - holiday in the states - and I pushed the crap out of it, and per the computer, didn't need any oil....

I think both Toyota & Honda make wonderful products although in the case of Toyota they are so damn boring. My preference is for Honda. I'm sure your GS350 will delight you, but does it rattle? I have Never! been in a Lexus without a rattle. I've seldom seen a review of a Lexus without total praise but for the fact that it rattled. One of our local auto rags recently reviewed the GS 350 & IS 250SE - both were delivered ex Japan with under 50 Kms on the clock - standard of finish & fit superb as usual - both rattled !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just like other people say, MB recommends to change oil every 13,000 miles. Adding a quart for every thousand, I should change change all of my 5.8 quarts at least twice. Thats a lot of oil draining. A seriously doubt any car burning, not leaking, that much will ever pass NY or CA inspection

My 240 is low Km & uses nothing. I think the blown in-lines are more inclined to consume oil

I will let the Lexus get the miles before I start tooting its horn because our C240 bit us in the butt with electrical, sun roof, trunk, exhaust shields rattling, etc. But so far it is great.
GM has oil burn spec's for the LS motors but that is done as CYA for them. My Camaro burns half a quart after 25+ 1/4 mile passes and a 250 mile drive to get to the track and back.
Again, my C240 has been great but yes, s/c or turbo'd cars seem to use that oil a bit more.
