If they said that leaves were blocking the drainage area, then that actually makes sense how water could've leaked in areas they're not supposed to.

A little common sense goes a long way in keeping your car running smooth.
Under the hood, right in front of your steering wheel right on the corner, you'll see the top cover with drainage channel and hole. Keep that clean and clog-free. Un-snap it and below it you will see the front SAM housing. Again, make sure that it's clean. And how water got in there is beyond me, but make sure the clips are securely fastened and the seal is set correctly.
These are all things I check on regularly when I wash the car or just play under the hood. Same thing goes for the air filter covers, battery cover, etc... Just because it's covered, doesn't mean things don't slowly creep inside.
Allowing accumulation of leaves, dirt, debris or water will only cause more head-aches later. Spend the time and clean your engine, and it helps in learning where the components are and what parts are actually down inside there.

Yes, people underestimate the importance of the little things.
Every once in while, you need to just pop the hood and look around.
Those damn drainage channels...
My X19 they got clogged, and suddenly at speed on the highway, my car started blowing steam out the defroster, as the water couldn't drain, and was being pulled into the vent system, which was set to heat at the time, and this happened suddenly at 70 mph in the middle of a bad rain storm.
I couldn't see crap.
It had various locations that would clog...
same with our cars. I cleaned that thing out the other day, it was all f'd up.
Slimy decomposed leaf matter completely clogged it...I used a coat hanger to ream it out, and clean the crap.
It's not a very good design. Removing those things, to properly clean, the screws are very poorly placed. Should snap open or something for quick cleaning.

you need to keep those areas clean at all times.
