Sort of, I think its "coup d'etat", meaning a cut/breach with the state. Theres also the root for what we call a "coupe", because its a sedan thats been "cut" to make a "coupe". I hope that made sense!

Actually, a lot of linguistically ignorant people other than Navy people say "nuwkular", and my other favorite, "newkulus" (nucleus). I remember way back in junior high and high school, some kids were saying it that way even then. I cringe whenever I hear those pronunciations. I just don't get it...

1. Often. Newsflash y'all, the "T" is silent!
2. Pedophile. It's "peeeed-o-file, not "Ped-o-file. The root word word for child is PEEED as in Pediatrician, and in Pediatrics, not PED as in Pedestrian (feet, hello?). Even L.A.'s police chief says this wrong! ARgghhh!

For example, dictionaries from years ago list two pronunciations for the word been. Both bin and bean were acceptable years ago. Modern dictionaries only list the bin pronunciation. The latter was a northeastern regional pronunciation that is no longer generally acceptable.
The root for words with ped- is foot , as you stated, and child. Words with the child root vary in pronuciation. Both pedagogue and pedant have the child root and are pronounced like the word pedal, as in pedal the bicycle. Centipede would be a word that is pronounced peed and has the foot root.
I hope this information will enhance your enjoyment of future news broadcasts.
