The plug is that hard to remove (you need to break it, and push out a plastic pin) because they don't want you to add fluid to the transmission.

It is a very special formula, designed to work with the friction material in the transmission as a system. It is not readily available through the aftermarket.

You need an expensive dipstick to measure the amount of fluid in the transmission, and overfilling the box can have dire consquences to your wallet. (although your pants will fit better because there will be nothing left to bulge the rear pocket.)

A radiator change always throws up a red flag. There were radiators from Valeo that had the nasty habit of mixing antifreeze into the transmission fluid. You might consider a glycol test to determine if your transmission is contaminated. Check your VIN at the dealer to see if your car is one of those affected.

I am personally hesitant to add new transmission fluid to old. If you are within 20K of 150K, you might consider having the box serviced, with new fluid, filter, and inspection.

I agree... I would service the trans before doing anything else. It's not a complicated thing to do and could save you tons of money down the road.

Standing facing the front, it's on the left in the back.
You may have to pry a red plastic piece off the cap (it breaks off)
then you can add the fluid, but as pointed out
you need a special dipstick that costs about 50-75 bucks.

Also as pointed out it may be a good time to fully flush the system depending on your reasons for replacing the rad, and the total mileage on the car.
My tranny started acting up around 120K miles, shifting funny, slipping etc.
but a complete flush seems to have breathed new life into it.

...a panty dropper...
Breaking off the plastic piece doesnt sound too attractive for the job to be done unless thats how MB does it. Would you need to replace the plastic piece?
