Frustrated, chirping noise

Hi guys,

I have been having a problem with my car for almost a year now. Its a 2003 C230 sports coupe. I have taken it to the dealership three times to fix the issue and each time they do something and the problem stays, the first two times it was under warranty, third time cost me $250 just for them to tell me it was "my secondary air intake?"

The first time they replaced some fluds, steering wheel etc, Second time they just said they could not find a problem and left it at that.

Its basically a chirping noise that comes from under the hood. It is very random but mostly occurs in winter after a couple of minutes of driving,

Other times I get it when driving over a rough road, just idling at a drive through or driving at slow speeds in a parking lot, at a higher speed I probably just dont notice it because of the wind/engine noise.

Its very irritating and usually when I pop the hood to take a look it magically tends to dissappear most of the time, go figure.

I had a friend take a look at it a couple of days ago and he said it was my idler pully, but I am not sure. I thought I would as one of you guys and see if we can figure out the problem.

Thanks so much.

does it sound like it's comming from close to the firewall? Does it only happen while driving?

there's a wiring harness that goes across the firewall by the windshield. The metal clip holding it squeaks. Zip tie. At least that's what it was on my car.

I had this happen in one of my rentals it was driving me crazy for the day I had it. I was told there was a TSB out for it. Maybe it's a different issue though the dealer probably would have found the issue if it were simple.

There's a tiny recirculating fan in the overhead light assembly that was chirping in my last C. I know it sounds weird, but I could swear the sound was coming from the front of the dash. My wife said she heard it coming from the back seat. It's one of those noises you can't really pinpoint, but it's frustrating.

Try the overhead console. There are 2 molded grilles up there...one is closed, one is open. The fan is behind the open one.

Just a thought...it's a one in a million chance, but it drove me nuts. Worth a try.
