If something impedes the wipers they will auto shut down - Make sure that nothing is impeding their movement & then reboot by removing & replacing ignition key & turn on. Also check for blown fuse.

fuse is ok. they 'park' half-way up and intermitten seems to be broken. i pushed them down and then removed the fuse so they would stay down. i'll put the fuse back tomorrow and see what happens.

Regret it sounds as though the problem may be terminal, but it may not be mechanical - it may be electrical. If you cut power to the wipers at the wrong time they will park in the wrong place. Sorry. Get an auto electrician to have a look.
