MPG observations from this weekend

drove down to san diego this weekend, gorgeous drive btw. noticed something and wondered if anyone could explain or had a similar experience.

way down i got 30.3 mpg- drove with cruise control on 70 pretty much the whole way. kinda boring but i had a good concert dvd going so it was nice. consider this the control for the experiment.

way back i got 28.4 mpg - but pretty much drove as fast and as fun as i could - averaged 85+ and had her up over 100 multiple times. this was a fun drive, i made record time. dont tell the cops.

exact same route, not much city driving - all highway.

i was expecting to get a lot worse gas mileage on the way back, i was flooring it but on the way there it was a steady 70 the whole way. is about 1.5 - 2.0 mpg about expected or whats the deal?

does it make much of a difference how you drive?

The terrain could be different, better tank of gas, coast time after flooring it, etc. There are lots of factors. Best comparo would be to drive back there like you drove home and compare with your original outbound trip. When I drive the crap out of it, there's a huge difference.

i dont know how long the drive is, but when you spread out a bunch of instances of flooring it over many miles, it averages out to be just a little lower than normal driving. thats how it is when i drive between tucson and phoenix, which is about 120 miles for me from door to door. i get 3 or 4 mpg lower.

Also, I know know if your car is the c230k or not, but if it is, your s/c may have already been on at 70mph thus resulting in a small difference when going at higher speeds.

when I try to drive to save gas I get like 30

When I drive like I want to I get like 28

So I would say it matters a little....but not really

what really kills you is flooring it (which I like never do) and accelerating from a stop (which is why I almost always go for it on a yellow light)
