Ha, try doing a water pump on a 6cyl 3.2L.
No less than 40 bolts each way, all different sizes and lengths + special tools required.
I made a template from a paper grocery bag to keep track of what went where.

Did this on my GF's ML.
I then understood why the local shop wanted $350 for labor.
It would've been a deal at that price.
I've found the M111 to be a well thought out engine.
Not so bad to work on, so far. Everything is easily accessible.

So do I need to undo all the lines that are held in place also? Doesn't seem to be fitting through the hole. Mine has a bunch of stupid hoses in the way, It doesn't just drop out.

Well the car went to the dealer as the alternator did not fix the problem. The dealer shot it to the front same being bad, 500 bucks. Replaced it, no good still acting up. Then trouble shoots (With MB USA help) it to the cam lobe sensors (?) are bad and leaking oil into the engine wiring harness causing it to short and ruin the engine comptuer, the O2 sensor and the harness. Total price to fix, 3600 total price to get car back 4600. This apparently is a known issue.

I cannot believe MB knows this issue exists and does nother about it expecting the customer to repair this on a 3 year old car. Once again my last MB.

My two old AMERICAN cars have never let me down nor cost me this much money to ever repair.

Good luck with your MB's I'll never own another

You can DIY, but I hear it's a pain.
Sorry.

From reading this I assume the alternator on the M271 is a pain. I think mine just went out. I replaced the battery yesterday and it ran fine the rest of the day, but today it did the same thing. Battery warning light came on, audio shut off, ESP, ABS and SRS lights all on and then limp mode. Anyone think it could be something different ?

Anyone know how long it takes to change it on the M271 ? Anyone change theirs ?

Ponti-wreck.. that's why it's discontinued, right?

Cam sensors are a known issue. A $40 pair of adapter wires can prevent this.

Just throwing this out there to anyone who might be reading this now or in the future.
