My C240 Transmission issue: short story
I have a 2002 C240 w/ 60,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago when the weather started getting cold, the car would shift in to reverse or drive VERY hard. Almost like getting rear ended hard. If I drove after the car shifted this way, it wouldn't get out of first gear. I would have to stop, restart the car and hope it would shift kindly in to gear (most of the time it would).
I brought it to the dealer and they said it was something called the shift plate that needed to be replaced. Also, they told me that it could be the battery as I had not had it changed since I bought the car (Ya, I know, but I only drive 6 miles a day to a train). Since the battery had low voltage, it might not have been sending enough juice to get the plate to move (which is controlled electronically).
I had them replace the battery and the shift plate and all is well.
It's probably been covered here as the dealer service tech told me it's a fairly common problem and they have a ton of shift plates in stock.

Where exactly is this part? Inside the tranny? Or outside?

On the repair reciept I got the description was:
"remove trans pan and replace shift plate fluid and filter"
Hope this helps anyone having this problem
