This is another case of unnecessary electronics complexity by MB.

update to trying to find these impossible bulbs, according to bagwell, he is usuing this bulb
http://209.87.151.155/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=M-28
which means that we must find a bulb that is 37mm or about 1.5 inches long and 5 watts. in my searching i have noticed that "dome light bulbs" come in three common sizes
1 3/16 inch or 30mm
1 1/2 inch or 37mm
1 5/8 inch or 41mm
hope this help those of you also involved in searching for the mysterious 5w dome light.
heh.. anyone know offhand what bulb the interior dome light is?

Your bulb might be going bad, same happened to me, but sometimes it would work and other is woudn't. They should replace them in the service lane when you take it in. (no charge)

the same thing happened to me about 3 weeks after i bought my car. I just ignored it because the license plate light looked fine to me. When i got my service A, my SA told me there was a light out, but it looked fine because there are 2 lights. - i guess there are two on each side.
i'd say go to your dealer if you have time, i'm sure it won't take long to fix.

i get that message for the right license plate bulb being out. only with mine, the bulb actually is out when the message appears. but eventually the bulb turns back on and the message goes away. has happened only twice in 1 year and 3 months so i'm not too concerned.

you might as well get them changed if they are going out once in a while. Since I changed mine I haven't had problems. Chances are your problem will come back if it's happened before.

i have a 2002 c230k and have the same problem it seems to be associated with a sensor. if I leave the lights off and drive during the day no problem as soon as I go park in the garage (DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER, DANGER) the indicator goes off and if continue to drive at night after a while the right one will flip out too. I will be looking into this futher but I did notice a small humming noise from the interior light panel and did take it off. I believe that this is the same circuit as the sensor and the lights... If I get more information I will post at next opportunty

Changing License Plate bulbs: What size bit?
Well I was going to change my license plate bulb however I couldn't find a phillips bit that fit perfectly. Also the screws are very soft. So I quit.
Anyone know what bit I should use? I don't want to strip the screws.

I've changed my bulbs quite a bit, and find that using a regular screwdriver, that fits of course, on those would be the best thing if you dont wanna have to keep going to the dealer for the screws..they definitely are soft, in fact I'm gonna have to get some next time I have to change a bulb!

It's a phillips head screw. You need a sharp phillips head and I'd suggest applying pressure towards the screw by holding the trunk a little down (to get leverage) because that'll ensure that you don't strip the screw. You are correct, the metal on the screws is very soft and can easily be stripped. Only way to preven that is to make sure that you are applying enough pressure towards the screw. I couldn't find a phillips head that was a "perfect" fit either.
