C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort RIP
Once I decided to take the backroads to the pit.

(The "pit" is what Silicon Valley is affectionately known as by people who live "over the hill" on the Santa Cruz side....people who live in the valley are known as flatlanders, since they drive with their foot on the brake the whole time, with white knuckles when they hit a mountain road...)

I mean backroads....these roads aren't even on a map.
Going up a steep backroad, I realized I was almost out of gas...
I knew if I could make it to the top, i could coast down the backside of the mountain...

I put it on the "range" setting.
At one point it said I could go just ONE more mile...
thankfully I came to the top of the hill (~2000 ft.) .....suddenly I could go 30 more miles....

Coasted to Los Gatos....whew!!!!!
Had a Espresso....drove past the Ferrari dealer, which oddly enough is accross the street from the High School....
ahhh. LG. The New money capital of the north.

In my experience, the light comes on at 1/8 tank, or about 2 gallons. I like it this way.

My minivan's light comes on at 1/4 tank, which, IMO is a joke on an 18-gallon tank. I can drive a minimum of 70 miles in that vehicle after the light comes on, so what's the point? Warn me TOO early and I tend to acclimatize to it and forget to take it seriously. Instead, I like to be warned only when it's necessary to seriously look for fuel.

Two gallons in my C320 will take me 35-50 miles, based on conditions... that's plenty of time to locate gas, even the brand I want to buy.

BTW, even though I cut it close, in 35-years of driving, I have never run out of gas.

Yeah, you have some time left after the light comes on. I was talking about after the needle is all the way down to E. Once it gets there, you won't make it much further. And the range gauge doesn't help much because it says 0 miles by that time. Some cars will continue to go for a while on E, but not the 203. So that is the only time to get gas immediately is when you have hit E.

Agreed, if you are on level roads, "E" (Range:0) means buy gas now.

I was in my friend's BMW 330ci, we saw the low gas warning light light up, the on-board computer showed the car can still run for 20 miles, 3 minutes later we were pushing the car...

sorry this has nothing to do with C class... but just remind you guys that sometimes the car would miscalculate..
