M271 - Strange sulphury smell after hard acceleration
Hi all,
I've had this problem since Day 1 (so 5.5 years and rolling now) and wondering if anyone has this problem with ther M271 (2003-2005) engine.
If I lay off the throttle abruptly after a few seconds of hard acceleration (ie flooring it), the entire cabin of the car will fill up with an awful sulphury smell. For lack of a better description, it smells like someone ripped a big one in the car.
Yeah, that's how the gf (and some of my friends) and I would describe it.
And no, it's not because someone ripped one.
This doesn't occur if I EASE off the throttle after hard acceleration.
Does anyone else with the M271 have this same issue or know anything about it? I don't know if it's some kind of malfunctioning valve in the emissions control or something.
I'm thinking of bringing it to the dealer to have it looked at, hopefully it'll be covered under Extended Warranty.

Problem is usually Hydrogen Sulphide from the Cat converter. Do you know what the sulphur level of you gasoline is. This is a fairly common problem and the smell of rotten eggs does smell awful. It should not come into the car if the windows are closed & the ventilation fan on.
Your car might have a defective Cat converter so make them check that but it might just be the fuel I'm afraid.

My car has never done this (2005 C230) - but I bought a new 2003 Honda Accord V6 back in the day and it would smell like rotten eggs after being driven hard. It never came into the cockpit, just after you parked it you could smell it around it. We were told it was the sulphur from the catalytic converter and fuel.
I still live in the same town and get fuel at the same stations so I'm not sure I believe it was the gas. Maybe like Glyn said your car has a defective one. Take it to the dealer and complain.. sounds like it should be an easy thing to duplicate.

This happens with the windows up and the fan running.
I've been using no-name 91-octane for 99% of my fill-ups, but that shouldn't make any difference? I use 87 no-name for the other family car with no problems.
Will check back with this one. Can't drive for a bit, it's snowing like mad here
Thanks for your help.

I understand where LILBENZ is coming from, but the fuel is your only source of sulphur - so it is the fuel but it depends how the Cat handles it. I'm afraid in South Africa this is a common complaint. A car with a perfect Cat can still do it. You just have to have the right conditions of temperature, mixture, water & sulphur & you produce Hydrogen Sulphide.
