You can control your ipod and whatever else you want though this unit and there is no installation necessary for this to work as it was designed as a portable navigation. however if u did want to install it its completely upto you since there is also the option to do that and the only benefit of having that is the hardwire power plug. this unit has built in speakers and is very loud and clear also does Text to Speech.
