Loud, repeated flap-closing sound from dash???
When I started the car at lunch today, I heard a loud sound like a plastic flap closing every ~5 sec for like a minute or two. It does this every time I start it up now. I read thru the hissing/clicking thread and don't necessarily think it's the stepper motor, but I'd guess it's something related. I'm wondering if anyone has a clue as to what's going on? I'd like to order some parts before I tear into this - hopefully get the parts I need beforehand instead of having to tear into it twice.
Also, is there any damage being done from whatever is flapping (will I burn a stepper motor out or something)?
Thanks in advance!!!

It is most definitively the stepper motor. Nothing bad will come of it if you don't replace it. Its a cheap part, but the install is a royal pain due to its location.

Actually it's not the motor. My SA told me it's the stepper motor LINKAGE that fails. They've changed suppliers since.
If under warranty, bring it in, enjoy the coffee.![Big Grin](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
If not, you can buy the linkage kit. Parts will know what to look for.

That is correct. The linkage breaks, not the motor.

Actually they both break. mtnman82 description is definitely the footwell linkage though. The footwell vents cycle every time the car is turned on. If they fail they retry and give up after 5 or 6 times. When the stepper motor fails an internal clutch slips and it gives a louder 'snapping' noise varying in repetition and at random times. There's several DIY posts on how to fix the problem.
