2002 C-Coupe questions

sorry if this topic has been discussed before.
I am at the cross road please help me guys....
my 02 coupe has only 79000km and I don't know I should keep it or not
(thinking about trade in for another car)
what are some protential problems with 02 coupe?
any 02 owners experience major issues/break down?
please share your thoughts and your input is very helpful to me
by the way, the dealer is offering me $12500 Canadian $ for the coupe.
thank you

I'd jump on that price, and get something more reliable. That shouldn't be hard. That's a great price.

what are you still doing here ?
i love coupe's, but 12,500 is so unreal... a dealer will offer you that for an 2005....
sell it NOW then think what else to get, for that price you can get a c320 sedan with quite some mods (check the classified section)

Eh, that's still almost ~$10K USD for a 7yr old car. I'd do it.

If you want something newer, by all means, upgrade. I certainly wouldn't get a sedan version of the W203...it feels smaller, the B pillar is always in your way to get out of the car, and unless its the C32 or C55...its just not as much fun to drive.

Its a unique car, and still plenty fun to drive. Mine has been quite reliable.

That's exactly 9,752 dollars US.

Isn't 10 thousand pretty high for a 7 year old merc? Ya I would do it for sure.

How about a CLK63 Black Series?

Yeh, that's what I was thinking.
At 50K miles, it's not even broke in.
The M111 engine is solid.
So is the tranny, just give it a full flush around 60k miles.

Personally I think the 2002 coupe is the best of the breed IMHO.
1.8L is nothing but problems.

the c320 (whatever the engine's name is) is also better than the m111, ive tried both...

What's wrong with M271? Other than the $12 hose issue (fixed under recall, car never died), the engine hasn't given me a single problem in 6 years.

With the potential of the M111 engine (not to mention weight advantage), I'd still take the M111 and use the $ differential to mod it to beat the 320.

no logic here..
if you mod your m111, why cant i mod my c320 so you're not beating the 320 by modding...

Unfortunately, you'd have to have basic reading comprehension to understand my point.

What I would be interested in, and I've never seen a comparison attempted at this, would be a direct comparison, hp/lb, between the two.

Such as:

C230 C320
Stock 0.xxx 0.xxx
Pulley / $ Equivalent 0.xxx 0.xxx after mod
Similar Exhaust 0.xxx 0.xxx after mod
TB 0.xxx 0.xxx after mod
Equivalent Tuning 0.xxx 0.xxx after tuning

My guess would be that the 230 would pull away initially once it overcame the stock numbers (assuming that the 320 would have the lead initially, which I'm too lazy to confirm), then the 320 would overtake it, but only after serious money has been spent on internals or turbo/sc work.

Talk amongst yourselves, and I'll need two volunteers with large bank accounts to carry out the experiment.

Sorry about the above table - no wysiwyg ftl.

No need to tawk amoungst,
I pull away from 320's routinely.
It's also a well built engine, but 12 spark plugs, 12 wires, and 12 ignition coils...
that just 26 parts I won't ever need to buy.
I will say, it's a very smooth engine. But when it came out, it added 3 grand to the price of the coupe, and even more on a sedan.
With less way less than 3 grand in mods, I put out more power and reliably.

2003 1.8L ?...how many miles? Soooo many people lately with bad heads at 70-80K miles...
and the stealer charges 5-10 grand to repair.
What happened to the guy who tore his own engine down and replaced the valves and guides?
I never saw if he got it running....

There's virtually nothing out there to mod your 3.2L V6 with. So, you'd get your *** handed to you after he's added a 300 dollar pulley. Plus its lighter, and isn't nose heavy. The M111 after a pulley swap makes about 235HP, and similar torque. More than enough to walk away from the heavier 215Hp V6.

I mean that sounds unbelievable 43 HP gain with a pulley?

I never thought the supercharger was capable of that.

That Is pretty hard to believe maybe with an ECU and other stuff and that's a maybe. But just a pulley that sounds crazy, hey but i'm not doubting it. I guess it's possible.

Boost goes from 5 or 6 psi to over 10 with the pulley. 198 at the rear wheels...typical driveline loss is 14-17%.. 228-232HP

Ask a Coupe owner for a ride. They do go quite nicely with a pulley.

Good to know.

I was never a coupe fan until I joined this forum. I have learned a lot and saw amazing coupes. Great job guys but I feel the coupes are becoming less and less. "Keep the coupes alive"

you all realize he's from Canada right? even at $9752 USD seems like a great trade-in price. Canadian cars also cost more to begin with. Their resale value of the same car can also be higher which we don't know for sure.

79k km is next to nothing. properly maintained you can easily go double or triple the distance without major issue.

like outland, tommy, and c230 sport coupe said, keep it for now. m111 might be lawn mower rough, but it's more reliable and easier to get power out of then the m271. the w/cl 203 have around 16-18% drivetrain loss btw. i've never seen anyone hit 14% even with manual. 235 crank is pretty accurate on what a good size pulley gives the m111.
