'05 230K Oil leak from top rear of engine
i got the parts in yesturday from the dealership, as far as the seal ring for the vacuum pump lid. i used a oil filter seal ring measuring 3 3/4 inch outer diamiter, from a penzoil oil filter. i dont know the exact filter,( cus a buddy of mine works at a shop, and he got me couple of seal to match up with the one i had.) installed everything back together and rand it for bout 1hr hard. i checked for seaping oil today and it was clean as a whistle. total price to fix the lil seaping leak 16 bux, the filter ring was free.
if you plan on diy, take the engine hook off first i used a 1/4 inch rachect with a 5/16, 12 wall socket, cus the e-10 tork socket i had was for a 3/4 was too big to fit between the fire wall and pump. the pump use the same socket. putting the engine hook back was a pain.
hope this helps you out cholleman,

dinky,
Thank you very much. I'm going to see about those seals this weekend. I guess i'll have to take a measuring tape to the parts store and see which oil filters have a seal that measures the 3 and 3/4".
Also, if it's not too much trouble, would you mind taking a pic of the location of the pump itself? I looked the other night and wasn't able to find it. Thank you.

FYI,
I took the part numbers you gave me and searched Mercedes Parts Superstore. With shipping, they came out to ~$12 and saved me a trip to the dealer.

This post was not helpful to either party, the original poster or the new guy. Posting in this older thread proved he was using the search function - something not many do. Had he started his own thread, he would have been told to STFF.
So perhaps you should stop "policing" and start "helping"?

+1 you jerk phoung
cholleman, i dont know how to post pick, the location of the pump is if you are facing the engine, between the firewall you'll see the engine hook, the pump is onthe left side (passenger side) its bout 1 inch wide with a vacuum hose hooked up to it on top. its side by side with the engine hook you can probaly see it better with the engine cover off. onlie two bolts hold it in place. its a tight spot but it will come out use a 1/4 inch rachect, with a 5/16 12 point socket.

finally got my seals the other day and poked around a bit behind the engine to locate the pump. you weren't kidding when you said the torx is a tight fit. doesn't look too difficult, but i hate installing seals blind (i'm OCD and like to see that the seal is in correctly). i guess now i'll need to go look for a oil filter seal. i'm assumming there is a groove machined into the body of this pump that the rubber seal mates to?
this is what you used, right?:

the oil seal ring i use was little short but it strecthed over to fit. make sure the oil filter ring seal is the round kind, not the square one. the pump was easy to put back in. the hook was the hard part.
well i FINALLY had time to replace these gaskets. unfortunately, I couldn't locate an o ring that seals the lid to the housing, so i'm forced to re-use the OEM one. it looked like it was in ok shape, but it was flat where it makes contact with the lid. hopefully, it'll work. the large black seal looked ok upon inspection, but the tiny o ring on the shaft was pretty dried up and worn out. i guess we'll see how it turns out.
...and screw that stupid engine hook. i tried using 12point sockets since i didn't have any reverse torx bits. ended up marring the lower bolt that holds the hook on. fortunately it's still possible, though a bit tighter, to get the vacuum pump out. if anyone knows anything about the large o ring/seal that seals the lid to the housing, let me know. and if anyone needs to replace their pump, the part number on the back of the housing is: A 271 230 09 65. worldimpex has them for $210 which is WAY better than the dealer's $750. others might be cheaper, worldimpex was the first google hit.

Not sure where anyone got the idea of $750.
$750? This part is listed as a "Vacuum Pump" with an MSRP of $210. Can be had at getmercedesparts for $157.

ok well, i couldn't find the large o-ring to replace the one inside the pump. i replaced the small o-ring and the large gasket and hoped that was it. unfortunately it wasn't. i took apart the pump and took the large o-ring to a few auto parts place to try to find an oil filter that had something that remotely looked like what i had. everything on the oil filters i checked looked like standard oil filter seals. nothing that would even remotely begin to fit in the groove inside the pump. could you possibly ask your friend what model he thinks the oil filter might be, because from what i looked at, i can't ever see it fitting the pump. i'm pretty sure that the ring inside the pump is the culprit, because when i put the lid back on the pump to put it all together, i could hear metal on metal like the ring had flattened out over time. thanks for any help.
i called my friend yesturday to give me the # but he had forgot, so i went out to the shop today, and the largest one they had was a pz 164 dont acuatlly know which car it goes too. but autozone or any other parts house could probaly run the filter # to get a differnt kind of filter which should have the seal to go with the filter. its from a canister filter. the seal is slitly smaller in diamiter then the orginal seal, but slitly thicker, but it will work. you will have to streacth it too fit inthe groove of the pump. again the filter is a pennzoil pz 164. i dont know or i just havent been paying any attention to were you can get a penzoil filter. the shop i got mine was at tirekingdom. hope this help out.

well i just moved the o ring to reflect where it is in the pic, but i'm not so sure that's the problem. the back of the oil filter housing doesn't appear to have oil on it as if it was leaking. after feeling back there by hand, it appears to be clean. the leak is on the passenger side. i snapped a pic so you guys can see. you can clearly see oil on the o2 sensor harness (yes my cam sensors are good. no oil in the plugs as of 5 minutes ago.) you can also see darkened metal from the oil leak below and behind the harness. any ideas guys?

I was told that tranny and engin leak are common on C class. At least, we had tranny gasket replaced twice in the current c class we have.
Dealer will quote it about $750 due to the labor fee. Fortunately, our vehicle is still under 100k warranty. thanks God
vacuum pump DIY
I seem to be having the same issue...Oil leak from vacuum pump. Is this a hard DIY job? Has anyone figured out the part number needed besides the SEAL RING 6689970145
Gasket 2712380180
Would I need to put the car on a lift to get to the vacuum?
I am pretty mechanically inclined but would love some images or guidance if anyone else has done this DIY before.
Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice.

vacuum pump DIY
WOW, you paid about $450 for this repair?
Why not try it yourself?
I looked up the pump price and I got $159.85
I'm wondering if I should just replace the pump. You know if it came with the seals?
Thanks for your input.

Did the repair for less than $160 (new pump) and 40 minutes. The posted the DIY on the DIY board. Look it up. Pretty easy DIY. I was a bit intimidated until I found the pump.

Looking at RM European, there are 2 part #s for the seal:
271-238-00-80
271-238-01-80
Does anyone know if these 2 seals are interchangeable? I know the MB system says 00 is used up to a certain serial #, then 01 is used after.
My car is supposed to use 00. I replaced it with another 00 and the stupid leak is back. Sigh.
