FSS Indicator

Any of you guys had experience of FSS indicator move up by 1000 miles? Mine went up from 5800 miles last night to 6800 miles this morning. My MPG went up to 23.1 from about 21 due to change in my daily route. Would this change the indicator? Any feedback?

According to the manual, FSS may increase or decrease the service interval depending on driving conditions, oil quality, etc. For example, if you do a lot of stop and go, it might reduce the interval over time (over and above the normal mileage). However, in 15,000 miles, I've only noticed my FSS moving downward in 100 mile increments as my mileage increases.

Thats why they call it Flexible Service System. It can vary depending on lots of factors.

If you do oil change between scheduled service the FSS senses fresh oil and moves up accordingly. In my case it is usually 500 miles. The type of driving (highway vs. city) also affects FSS indicator.

I didn't change the oil and I have about 5500 miles on my car and my FSS indicator was on schedule for 10,000 miles interval however it went up by 1000 miles and then another 500 miles. Now my FSS interval is at 12,900 miles. I asked my service advisor and he told me that is is quite normal. Anyone experienced this?

The FSS on the M111 engine can't do that. The V engines and the new M271 4 cylinder have a more sophisticated FSS which can sense the quality of the oil. The FSS on the M111 goes by time, mileage and the way the car is driven. I had the oil change in my car at 2500 miles, and the FSS didn't change.

The way you drive. It will recalculate at times because of your driving habits.

I would like to know the answer to that question, too. Although my FSS had never changed. I guess my driving habits are pretty consistent.

I had the car since last September and the FSS moved down very consistently (about 100 miles increment; driving very normal consistent daily routine) until last December (I only drove very little due to company shut down and vacation). I started the normal driving pattern starting January and putting in more highway mileage due to changing my daily commute route and FSS moved by 1000 miles then by another 500 miles. I asked my service advisor and he told me it was OK. Now I am on schedule for 12,900 miles for first service A.

It must be the extra highway mileage that changed it. Don't worry about it, just take it in when it says it's time. I think mine went up a little bit at one time, but now I think it's still pretty close to 10,000 miles.

I do primarily highway driving and my FSS has accurately been running down from the 15,000km mark since my last oil change. So it doesnt seem to make a difference to my C240. Perhaps it just accelerates in city driving conditions.

Howwever, winter driving may be another factor.

My last interval, however, lasted 15,800kms.

...but perhaps I should do a 400km trip to Ottawa and see if I can get the FSS to change its mind

I dunno Lynn, I just changed the oil @ 5000 miles on my 2003 M271 and the FSS didn't budge. Either it's not that smart, or early 2003's have some left over parts in 'em.

It could be that the old oil hadn't begun to break down.

This morning my FSS went up again (from 6900 Miles to 8000 Miles). Now I am at about 13900 Miles interval for first service A. This is third time in 4 weeks that my FSS moved up in mileage. Any feedback? Is it normal?

IMO, that's just too much of a change in the wrong direction. My car counts down in 100 mile increments that basically represents the inverse of the odometer... For every 100 miles increase on the odo, the FSS comes down 100 miles, which is what I expect.

You mind want to post that in the tech forum in case mbtech208 didn't see it here. I agree with MB-BOB. That is too much of a change in a short period. Keep records if you haven't done so already and persue your case. IMHO
