6 speed shifter adjustment

After much thought I belive that my difficulty in selecting first gear when stationary, is caused by a cable adjustment problem. The shifting was fine when new but now has a problem at 12000km. Mercedes Canada has informed me that the shift cables are adjustable but my dealer was no help when I took it in for repair. Does anyone know how to adjust the first gear cable? I suspect I need to remove the center console, so how is this done? Or maybe the adjustment can be done from under the vehicle?
The reason I have deduced this as the cause is that I suspect the first gear synchro cone is in constant engagement. If I try to select first huge resistance is felt. If I move the shifter towards second, or any other gear, and then re try first it goes right in with no problem. Shifting into first while moving is no problem.

My linkage was adjusted by the dealer before delivery. I don't know this, but I'm guessing it can be done from under the car.

I didn't think there were any cables to fool with, this is after all, a RWD car...the transmission is directly under the center console.

There were no cables in the pics of the shifter that have been posted and Bos didn't mention any when he changed his to the C7 shifter.

I was having a similar problem with mine. There was a damaged bushing on the linkage. They replaced the whole linkage system, and then re-aligned it. Seems to have fixed the shifting problem and a rattle in fourth. I don't know why the dealer would clame this if it weren't true, but what ever they did it seemed to fix the problem. I haven't tossed the car on the lift and checked, but I'll do that later this week when I'm at a buddy's shop.

STFF - Bos did a nice writeup. AFAIK, the shifter is exactly the same, so it should work. I've been wrong before, though.

I think that you are talking about the cable that is used to engage/disengage the clutch (nothing to do with the gearbox linkage). I hope this helps.
Thanks,

Angel

The shifter is directly connected to the tranny, as this is RWD. A FWD car the shifter is connected via a linkage bar or cables, I have not seen cables myself just a bar. The adjustment should be done to the linkage itself, where it goes into the top of the tranny.
