OBD Readiness Failure

Had a bit of work done to the car including valve cover reseal and crankshaft position sensor. The car has 115k miles and will not pass the emissions test in PA. The emissions check is just a small tire shop and they keep saying to drive it some more because it states the OBD is not ready to make a determination regarding the pollution control system. The Dealer is in a neighboring state and they say the same thing. Problem is I have put over 400 miles on it and it still comes up not ready.

Any thoughts would be great. I did a search but nothing much comes up about the failed readiness.

Thanks

Pat

I see you have driven 400+ miles... not trying to sound negative, however it
may be important to know if that was 400 one mile trips all from "cold" starts.
There are certain conditions or "logic chains" required before ME will validate emissions functionality.
I grew up on the Mississippi, so I could literally be in the next state in under
a mile and in less than 3 minutes.
I seem to remember one test only running during coolant >80C and 60+mph coast to 30mph however Sailor Jerry and pineapple juice is causing D channel HDLC frame aborts, AIS alarms, and my DNIS swapping with ANI!
Do you have an OBD-II scanner or real-time capture interface like my BR-3?
(I SO have to get that CarSoft mux C230_SS found!)
Any pending codes? If they can tell you it hasn't completed drive cycle tests,
they should be able to indicate which ones haven't run.

If you can tell us what car you have I might be able to find some more
detailed info on the specifics of the tests themselves...

Thanks - It is a 2001 C320. The 400 miles have been everything from 2 mile milk pick up to 75 mile trips over 2 weeks. I do have the OBDII scanner and no codes come up. I was going to take it back to the dealer to run readiness scan codes. Not sure if that will help but I am at a loss and am 1 month past inspection/emission.

Any other thoughts would be great.

My apologies for not posting sooner.

When running Diagnose, I see non-continuously monitored tests are:

Catalyst Monitoring
Heated Catalyst Monitoring
Evaporative System Monitoring
Secondary Air System Monitoring
A/C System Refrigerant Monitoring
Oxygen Sensor Monitoring
Oxygen Sensor Heater Monitoring
EGR System Monitoring

The real question is which of these isn't ready/completed and what logic chain conditions must be met for the test to be ready.

Wish I could help ya more right now - good luck.

Just make sure you aren't clearing anything on exit, because that 'resets' the readiness too... [dumb post but maybe some scanners do that/can do that?]

I don't believe this software is sophisticated enough to clear that part of the ECU.
Only way I know of resetting is disconnect the battery (don't get me started on the rear SAM LOL).

I still have to get that mux so I can run CarSoft...

"It's always better to post in an existing thread" ha...

So yes, I am having issues with my readiness monitors not clicking to ready.
I have taken a trip to the Sierra mountains and back, as well as trips 'over the hill' to Santa Cruz, and recently to Oakland from San Jose and back and still my Catalyst and um...one other won't go ready. I'll check and see exactly what they are.

Incidentally I seem to be getting an NA from the EGR, but the 02 sensors are ready, and FYI the catalyst was recently replaced, like 2 weeks ago.

I reset the OBD at that time.
I had a P0171 bank 1 lean, but it since cleared itself, and after that I also cleaned the MAF.
So, can't get the damn car smogged till it's ready, and meanwhile I'm 2 months overdue though the fees are paid. Just need to have these monitors go to ready so I can smog and get my tags, and I've easily driven 600 miles since I last cleared the OBD and replaced the cat.
FYI- I'm using "Torque" on my Android phone to check the monitors after the smog guy told me it wasn't ready.

Just wondering want you did to resolve this. I'm dealing with the same issue and have over 500 miles.

Took my 2003 C230 well over 500 miles before it was ready. That, after battery replacement.

So a weak battery was also an issue preventing engine readiness?

in a lot of states they can legally pass you with one or two parameters not ready. Worth looking into.

In California, you can only have one. They have tighten it. BIG TIME

The EPA law only forces Benz to replace the failed emissions part before 70k miles. Other states it's 80,000.

No, battery replacement necessitated the re-set of engine readiness.
