Carlsson Wheels and Bodykit?

firstly, im an MB newbie so sorry if im asking dumb questions!

within the next couple of months my father will be ordering a 2003 W203 C240 Osbidean Black on black leather..

instead of upgrading it with 17" AMG wheels and bodykit option, he is considering a Carlsson package as it looks much nicer than the subtle AMG and we have been offered it for a very good price in comparison to the AMG.. about 5k cheaper!

the package consists of 18 x 8" Carlsson 1/5 or 1/6 wheels (undecided) 225/40/18 Dunlop SP9000 tyres, Carlsson Sport Springs, Carlsson muffler, Carlsson front lip, rear lip and bootlid spoiler, and Carlsson badging

my questions are:

1. will any of these modifications void warranty?

2. are the carlsson 18" wheels good - strength and weight wise?

3. will the carlsson springs give a harsh or uncomfortable ride? i have been told they are rebadged hr sport springs...

4. does anyone have any good/bad reviews about the dunlop SP tyres?

5. is the carlsson muffler overly loud?

6. also, how does the fitment of the carlsson body kit compare to amg bodykit? does it fit right with no unsightly gaps?

sorry for so many questions but they are things that need to be answered before we decide!

thanks again for the help, Aaron

That's ok - certain people here do it all of the time.

instead of upgrading it with 17" AMG wheels and bodykit option, he is considering a Carlsson package as it looks much nicer than the subtle AMG and we have been offered it for a very good price in comparison to the AMG.. about 5k cheaper!

Why not get a C320 then? Seems like a shame to put all of that money into a 240, especially with the additional unsprung weight you'll be adding.

my questions are:

1. will any of these modifications void warranty?

Depends on the dealer, but generally, you're not doing any serious mods, so you should be fine.

2. are the carlsson 18" wheels good - strength and weight wise?

They're pretty heavy, but haven't heard about any strength problems.

4. does anyone have any good/bad reviews about the dunlop SP tyres?

I had them on my crx - they were decent for all situations, but good at none, especially dry weather traction. I'd recommend Bridgestone Pole Position S-03s, especially if he's going to get a new set of rims - stock, use for winter, and aftermarket, get some stickier summer tires.

Answered the ones that I have some knowledge of. I think that the best upgrade is to get the C320 instead, and then go for a more manly aftermarket handling package. HTH

my questions are:

1. will any of these modifications void warranty? No, except the suspension. If your shocks are dead BECAUSE you have Carlsson springs on, then the dealer has the right not to cover the shocks under warranty. But this will unlikely be the case, MB shocks are pretty good.

2. are the carlsson 18" wheels good - strength and weight wise? Yes, but the 1/5 & 1/6 will be coming out with slightly different designs in the next six months or so. Dont know whether you're getting the newer version or not, but I guess you're being offered of the current version.

3. will the carlsson springs give a harsh or uncomfortable ride? i have been told they are rebadged hr sport springs... No, they should give you a smooth ride, obviously not as smooth as stock springs, but very comfortable for everyday driving.

4. does anyone have any good/bad reviews about the dunlop SP tyres? They are average to good tires. But I heard they're kind of noisy. Personally, I have not tried it, so cant really comment on it.

5. is the carlsson muffler overly loud? No

6. also, how does the fitment of the carlsson body kit compare to amg bodykit? does it fit right with no unsightly gaps? If you are getting genuine Carlsson products, they should be a direct snap on. Unlike AMG, those are add-on lips, not full bumpers. You will not find any fitment problems. The question is whether you want your car to look like a C32 or you want your car to have a full Carlsson look.

sorry for so many questions but they are things that need to be answered before we decide!

thanks for the help everyone!

tommy - thats what i said to my dad also! hehe
but basically if we were to get a C320 we might as well buy an E240 which is the same starting price but not really what he's after i guess? he has his heart set on a 240..
also, our winter's arent cold enough to have to put snow tyres on
if they are reasonable tyres i think we'll just stick with the SP's for now..

Harris - yes, the Carlsson products are genuine. The whole package retails at $12,000 Australian, but we are getting it closer to $9000 Australian..
check out the tcca motorsport website, http://www.tccamotorsport.com.au

in comparison AMG wheels and C32 bodykit is nearly a $30,000 Australian option here and they will only give us the AMG Style II wheel in 17", not 17" C32 versions..

Mach430 - thanks for the offer, but it may not match the rest of the body additions and also may be too much hassle to bring it to Australia with taxes and import duties etc. so not really worth it..

Hey Aaron318is,

Milan @ TCCA can get some good gear that's for sure. A few of the guys on the VW/Audi forums have been dealing with him for a while. You might want to find out who will be fitting these products though as I believe he does not have his own workshop.

Cheers,
Jim.

yea from what i've heard, its probably better to get shocks and springs because your stock shocks will be shot after 15k miles, and the ride will be harsh. i have the carlsson 1/5, no problems yet. i say just save that money, get an E-class and throw on 19s, no need for the bodykit or exhaust. just my opinon.

Hey Aaron,

Yep I am Sydney.
Have a 3.5 week old C180 Kompressor Coupe.
I know a few people who have bought wheels, H+R suspension and stuff like that from him.
I have never bought anything from him personally though.
