Question "Brake Wear"

Got this message on my dash on my way into work…did a quick search, and obviously I will check my manual when I get home, but I didn’t find much here to what exactly this means (my car has almost 30k miles, so im sure its the front pads are getting worn).

Didn’t know if anyone was bored and had a quick second to decipher for me... lol.

Brake pads need replacement. There's a sensor mounted inside one of the pads that gets activated when the wear reaches a certain point. I believe they put the sensor on only one front wheel, one pad now so you need to look at all the wheels immediately.

Yep, you need new pads. Just curious, do you do a lot of in-town driving? Just comparing, as I have almost 50K miles and have about 40% pad left. I do about 80-90% highway driving though.

On 2005 model 230k there's a sensor in the front passenger. When the pads wear to a certain point the sensor also wears down and starts rubbing on the disk. It actually creates an open circuit on the sensor and this causes the warning on your dash. I've driven 1 month with the warning light on and after replacing my pads I had about a little less than 1/8 wear on the pads. But I don't suggest you let it run that long. Get the pads replaced. Sensor will need to be replaced also.

You may want to check your pads now. My car never squeeled and just threw the warning on. Maybe there's a problem with the sensor?

FYI the sensor is about $12-$15 from the stealers. If you only have one on your car then it won't cost you much to buy a new one when you're ready to replace your pads.

The salesman told me to downshift when braking. It's in the book, too. The brakes don't really stop the car if I drive over 40 mph. It just took me a while to catch on and do it ALL the time.

unless your dealer is difference from mine, they replace them when they swap out new pads regardless if they have been activated or not.

I think the rears have sensors as well. I can see something that looks like a sensor on the right rear.

How were your rotors? Did you also have them replaced?

My rotors were pretty worn in the front so it had to be replaced. On ventilated disk brakes the pad and disk doesn't wear out evenly. Meaning the outter portion of the disk becomes more recessed over time so when you put new pad, the new pads flat suface will not make 100% contact with the disk. This could potentially cause longer braking distance or more pressure be applied to the brake pedal to stop the car normally. Probably not safe not to replace the disk also.

The rear disks was still ok on mine so I left those alone and just changed the pads. Hope this helps.

Why would you want to preserve a few hundred dollars in brake parts at the expense of exponentially more expensive engine parts? I get the engine-braking recommendation for long down-hill stretches but to engine brake continuously seems

No rear sensors on 2005 C230s, at least.

Sensors can be purchased online for $3-6 versus the $12-15 at the dealerships, if anyone is interested. Also they're fragile and replacing the pads before the warning won't necessarily mean that you can re-use them. I've heard they break easily when you try to remove them.

I plan to look at all 4 pads this weekend. Can anyone say for-sure how many sensors the 07's have??

Do I have to replace the rotors with the pads? Is that what I am hearing? So for any "break" that needs to be serviced, I will need a pad, a sensor and possibly a rotor?

What are some good replacement part suggestions and what’s the cost?

I plan to DIY...

Seems the # of sensors is all over the place and not even consistant across a model year. But my 07 has 1 front and one rear. So, you should only need 1 sensor for doing a front pad change. But, again, you need to pull the wheels and double check.

Rotors generally need to be replaced every other pad replacement, so you should be good, but please measure rotor thickness to be totally sure.

Not a lot of selection for replacement pads for the 07's, but lot's of people here like the Akebono's, and Rock Auto lists them as now available for the 07's.

The min thickness is stamped/engraved on the outer edge of the rotor.

Just gonna change the front pads... can anyone comment on these in the link? I had them (Disk Italia) on my Crossfire SRT-6 and loved them. I didn’t take the rear pads out to inspect, but I removed the wheel, looked at the pads and they looked nice and fat. Money is tight right now, so fronts only…

I inspected the front rotors, and they looked/felt pretty fat also (didn’t measure bc I left my calipers at work) but I assume they are fine as I only have 30k (mostly highway) miles on her and I don’t drive that hard. I might take them to get re-surfaced as they look a little warn (circled). Is this normal? I don’t feel any pulsing like they are warped when stopping… they just have the circular wear marks.

How hard is it to change the sensors? I didn’t see any instructions in the DIY I found…

See attached image on rotor wear. I think your eye will be the better judge on the wear. There's also an indication marker on the outter rim of the disk if I remember correctly. My rotor was replaced after the 2nd set of pads about 54k miles on the car. You might be ok to just replace the pads.

As far as the sensor, it's very easy once you see it. Just unplug on both ends and the new one goes back on the way the original was unplugged.

there is no indication marker on the rotors.

you just feel the rotor by hand over the edge or by mm measurement to see if the pad has taken away too much rotor thickness.

I inspected them... seem to be thick enough. I just think there is no way the rotor could be warn out after 29k miles of light driving. Im doing pads only.

typically the rotors last for about two sets of pads. depends on how you drive should last around 50-55k miles. 60k miles you definitely need to change out the rotors.

See image. Also on the surface of the hub it says MIN 26mm or something. I forget the exact number. Maybe that's something else.

Frank, is this not it? This is what an SA showed me atleast.
