Odd issue with idle

Greetings,

I'm brand new to the world of Mercedes after coming over from two Saabs (900s and a 9-3 Viggen) and a VW.

I'm having an odd issue with my 2005 320.

Sometimes when I come to a stop, the car starts to shake a little and the rpms drop, and I have no idea what it is.

It feels somewhat like what would happen if I were to come almost to a stop in 3rd gear in a manual, w/o clutching in.

After a couple of seconds, the car rights itself.

I have no idea what is causing this - if it is something as simple a clogged fuel filter or injector, or something wrong with the trans.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Nevermind... I just saw this thread:
https://mbworld.org/forums/c-class-w...esitation.html

I'm going to try cleaning my MAF sensor and order another one if that doesn't fix the problem.

Easy test fix and doesn't require a $99 diagnostic fee or finding time for an appointment.

55K miles. I'm not seeing any warning/check engine lights.

It seems to happen intermittently when I come to a complete stop - and doesn't seem to come from either a hot or cold engine.

I've cleaned a MAF sensor before in the VW Jetta VR6 I had for a hot minute, so I was thinking I'd check that first before I sunk the time in on taking it into service.

Does this thing have a coil pack in it like a VW Jetta? I've had to JB Weld those damn bosch coil packs back together before.

Before you start pulling things apart please check for stored codes. It stops a lot of guessing & messing around. Go & buy a $50 OBDII scanner from Kragen/PartsAmerica. The plug is behind a flap under the steering column. You might be storing codes without throwing a CEL. The system does this.

Is there any particular sort of code scanner that I need?

For example, there is an Autozone near me that stocks this unit:

The reason that johnand & many others recommend the scanner I show above is that it's the cheapest I know that tells you what the code means so you don't have to look it up in a code book. Just buy any cheap scanner that is OBDII/CANBUS compliant that gives you the code AND what that code means.

Funny enough, if you go to Advance Auto Parts, they'll just flat out lend you a OBDII code scanner free of charge. You just have to give them your drivers license.

Anyway, no codes were returned. I did however pick up a bottle of fuel system / injector cleaner and filled up with a fresh tank of 93 OCT - and the shuddering at low idle speeds has diminished somewhat. At least I haven't noticed it happen again - then again, it has been cooler out so it may just be coincidental.

I am half wondering though, if the dealer put cheap gas in the car or if there was water in the gas or in the tank.

We've been down this road so often - sometimes it's nothing but a clean up - Other times it's like Phil - one of our moderators car that we chased down everything - cleaned everything & it ended up being the throttle body actuater that was chattering. New TB and all was well. That car was throwing an EECS code which had absolutely nothing to do with the throttle body.

Run two tanks of fuel with Techron concentrate back to back & see what happens. It's the best & recommended by Benz.

If you get energetic then clean the MAF & throttle body. They are upstream of the fuel system so fuel additives can't clean them

I must say I have an attitude that if it's not broke then leave it alone. I do recommend carrying a cheap OBDII scanner in the glovebox of all modern cars. Keeps you away from the stealership!

That's what I put in it. They were having a sale of 2 for $10 at Advance.

I may do that. I started the hunt for the MAF sensor last night. The 3.2L V6 doesn't seem nearly as straight forward as the Jetta's VR6 or the Saab's 2.3L Turbo engine, so I need to find some diagrams of where everything is.

Agreed. I will eventually pick one up - just borrowing the $130 model from AAP for free last night seemed like a good idea after dropping the cash for the down-payment on the C320 over the weekend.

I have the extended warranty, so I can get the car fixed for free - I just can't be without it and I'm fighting the 1.5 hr drive to the dealership in weekday traffic.

Pleased you have the warranty - Search PA_Pete - he did a MAF clean/replacement & throttle body on a 320 that has not been added to the stickies yet.
