Changing engine oil
Hi all,
I have this C180 K, I know MB has a list of approved engine oil (229.3, 229.31 & 229.5). My questions are:
I have this C180 K, I know MB has a list of approved engine oil (229.3, 229.31 & 229.5). My questions are:
- Is there any different, if it is in Australia?
- Can I use Valvoline Durablend SAE 5W-30 oil? Would it harm my car?
- Other than Mobile 1 0w-40, how good is Valvoline Synpower 5w-40? It is listed in 229.5 sheet.
- If I use any 229.5 approved oil, do I have to use the fleece oil filter? Where can I get them in Sydney?

any filter is ok. but from what ive been told once you fo synthetic stay synthetic. also mobil is still the recommended brand.. if you have a owner's manual check for compatible oil. if not. i believe karo has a post on owners manuals on w203's. try using the search feature.

If the product meets 229.5 it's fine. Nothing wrong with Valvoline. Just do not use 229.51 oils - They are for passenger car diesel with Cat & particulate filters - ash<1%.
Try to use the genuine Benz fleece filter if you can get. Otherwise you have to use the genuine Benz Hengst paper filter - not as good. It is less of an issue in Australia because you oil drain like SA at 15,000Km & not 20,000Km like the USA.
See the Definitive oil thread & numerous Fleece filter threads for further info.
