MB sold 187,000 the same year. For 2002, MB was up to something like 195,000....I don't know BMW's 2002 figures.
Sorry, I was thinking terms of the C-class vs. 3-series, the entry level vehicles that are most commonly modded. Last I checked, MB sells about 50-60% of the number of 3-ers BMW sells. I imagine the demographics are still skewed towards a younger BMW crowd for these cars as well.

I looked at the BMW 3 series before I purchased the M-B C320. At 58 years of age, (having driven a Corvette and a Mazda RX-7 in my younger bachelor days) I wanted a family luxury car that I could drive confidently, if not extravagently, on the road. I chose the M-B for its greater passenger and trunk space, as well as what in my opinion is the M-B brand's slightly better safety reputation.

i think it's more a demographic thing...renntech, brabus...r all really expensive for some of the most basic stuff....ouch.

I think this is because BMW sells a lot more cars in the US than MB, and tends to sell them to a younger audience more interested in mods. If MB had the same sales volume and demographic as BMW, I'm sure there would be a lot more aftermarket support. Look how much aftermarket stuff there is for VW, even more and usually cheaper than BMW.

Cheers, BT
i mean, common, just to start...y is the old e36 m3 about ~40k while the old w202 c36 cost us ~$57k (yah yah, hand built engine all...but...)...

would u all really be complaining that much if had both? been in 325 and c320, both automatic. the 325 is definitely more sparse than a c320, which is actually fairly luxurious. the c320 really leans quite a bit tho...and the 325 just feels so at ease in the twisties. the 325 really feels quite bumpy sometimes, not harsh at all (u should ride my wagon), but quite bumpy...c320 is fairly smooth and well, caddi like. both cars had sports package btw...

can't we simply agree c-class is more luxurious, 3-series is more sporty.

btw....i don't think i've seen a 3-series taxi-cab in europe...but i've seen plenty c-class and e-class taxi-cabs....

i think that about sums it up. got any pics of that volvo wagon? i test drove an 850 turbo wagon shortly before we got my wife's car in '86 - couldn't believe the acceleration - thought it was the best kept secret in cars, a real "q-ship".

Did you try turning in the 850R, I thought it was the worst understeering car I have ever driven, sure was fast though.

Very true - can't remember if that year the 850R was front wheel or all wheel drive, but the wheel wanted to jump right out of your hands when exiting a corner. Not "good handling behavior", but definitely entertaining.

only fwd...all 850 were fwd...except maybe some late 97 model 850. i agree with the torque steer...u have to make sure to apply the proper amount, unlike a rwd. but even so...volvo forgot to put a limited slip differential to help the cause, only euro-spec 850r manuals have limited slip. given it's first fwd...volvo forgot a lot of things imo. i also agree with the understeer...but i've since done some upgrading...and u can get the tail to come around a bit by tapping the brakes just a bit mid-corner...fwd...sigh. i can get it under 15 sec in quarter mile...suppposed to be better, but i simply have a hard time trying to launch a 275 hp fwd on auto properly, my 60 ft times r like 2.6~2.8 ouch!...others have done it....but i ain't no race driver still...i like how i can smoke people and remain a sleeper haha. some pix can be found at stickypix.com

only V70 XC had the AWD (not the new one, but the last gen). 850/S70 were all fwd. 960 was rwd.

prev gen... 850 & s/v/c70 platform...there were some late 850 (in 97 when 850 became s/v70) that managed to get awd. v70 had xc awd (with light pressure turbo), awd (n/a engine), and r awd (hpt). s70 also had awd in some years.

Yes...I almost bought one...

1999 V70R AWD. My friend used to own a 95 Yellow T5R. The hp is way too hard to control over the curves but it will launch like a rocket (in late 90s). I bet AWD one will be more fun to drive.
