Severe wear on inside of front right tire
2004 C320 4Matic Sedan
I was under the car when I noticed severe wear on the inside of the front passenger tire. The cords are showing through. These tires are not that old. What a bummer!
I jacked the car up and felt no play in the wheel.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?
Thanks,
Joe

Check the castor & camber bushes - Get that car on a decent wheel alignment machine soonest. Make sure they set the castor one degree more positive on the RHS than the LHS. Typically 10.6 & 9.6 - Get fluted bolts if necessary to get alignment in spec. Discussed at length in DIY stickies. If anything you should display slight outer shoulder wear on front tyres - have you messed with the suspension?

Sounds like good advice. I don't trust the local "chain" alignment shops here. I recently found a shop that specializes in MB, BMW, etc. I haven't tried him yet, so here's an opportunity.

BTW - the castor setting is required to stop the car pulling right with the camber of the road. Most US alignment shops don't seem to know this.

Are these bushings made of metal with an off-center hole for adjustments as my Ford Ranger has? Or are you talking about a rubber bushing? I'm having trouble right now with WIS. That program is quirky, sometimes it works fine, and other times it won't let me in.

Well, I looked real close under there today and found nothing that looked suspiciously wrong. All the bushings looked good to me. The wheel seems tight. I tried rocking it every which way while jacked off the floor. No movement.
Could it just have gone so bad out of alignment that the tire wore so unevenly?
Got an appointment with a local independent shop on Saturday. I'll post the results.

I'm seeing more and more of these posts =/
My driver side has been constantly destroying whatever tire I swap up there.
I've had 2 alignments done in the past 3 months.
One at an indy: Said it was fine.
One at the Dealer: Also fine, done because my dad wanted his 'peace of mind.'
The dealer inspection was done in the past week, and I've only driven it about 100 miles. Can't tell if it's getting more or less damaged.
But when they did the inspection, all they said were that my tires are old:
Does 3~4 years count as old?
hrm....

Old tyres have nothing to do with uneven wear. It's all an alignment issue.
PCNjoe - If the bushes are good - go get your alignment done. It takes a while to wear a tyre the way you describe. Maybe you hit a pothole or something.
Once they have set the alignment. Make sure they bounce the car on the machine & that it stays in spec once they have done this.
