How Did They Do That??
i think pel C means he got a notice in the mail, right? and he wants to know how mercedes knew it was time for his car to go in for service A.
That would be correct.
Of course you would expect the FSS to indicate this to you.

pel C, had you been in to the dealer anytime recently before this to get anything fixed? They always record your mileage in the computer, so maybe if you went in recently and you were close to 10,000, they decided to send out a notice. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't think TeleAid is reporting your mileage to anyone.
Car hasn't been in since I drove it off the lot in July 2001. It's got me buffaloed - too much of a coincidence. I think I'll just have to ask the service guy!

when ever you drive within 5 miles of any MB dealer, your teleaid is able to receive a coded signal broadcast from the service department. This code instructs your teleaid to transmit all the information in your car to the dealer. this includes mileage, ECU information, current time and temperature, tire pressure, and because all 2003 models have a built in GPS RF transceiver built into the key, they can plot the last 500 miles you have traveled on a map. This information is uploaded to a central database and is shared with the Office Of Homeland Security, the FBI, INTERPOL, and your local police department. This information is also used by MB to send you service notifications and is forwarded to to direct mail ad agencies to better target products and services to you. didn't you ever wonder why your junk mail is ALL FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES??? that's why. makes you wonder...
hope this was helpful.

it took some digging to find, but this is how it works:

That's pretty much what I suspected, except you left out the part about the black surveillance helicopters.
Actually, Matt230K is a lot closer to the truth. The service guy said they do keep tabs on average mileage / use everytime you stop in. I had dropped by the service center after about three months of ownership, and they figured my mileage based on that. So it was just pure coincidence. How disappointing.
I'm sticking with yodelbenz' theory.
