How Did They Do That??

I'm taking my 2002 C240 in for Service "A" tomorrow - I'll keep you posted as to problems - but here's the deal: I got the notice it was time for this check-up a couple weeks ago ("10000 mile service", and it was just about right on - 10350 actual miles), but I've had the car for 18 months!! I didn't renew Tele-Aid - just what kind of signals is this car giving off, anyway? This is pretty scary stuff.

The cars ECU takes sample of oil and other various stuff and adjusts the FSS accordingly. I have heard of some people having the service at 8000 miles and 12000 miles. It all depends on how you drive the car and what climate your in. tele-aid has nothing to do with the FSS schedule

i think pel C means he got a notice in the mail, right? and he wants to know how mercedes knew it was time for his car to go in for service A.

That would be correct.

Speculation, but would it not be reasonable to assume that although the FSS monitors conditions (on condition maintenance), that there is also an upper time limit (scheduled maintenance). Which in this case could be 18 months.

Of course you would expect the FSS to indicate this to you.

pel C, had you been in to the dealer anytime recently before this to get anything fixed? They always record your mileage in the computer, so maybe if you went in recently and you were close to 10,000, they decided to send out a notice. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't think TeleAid is reporting your mileage to anyone.

Car hasn't been in since I drove it off the lot in July 2001. It's got me buffaloed - too much of a coincidence. I think I'll just have to ask the service guy!

actually, this is what is happening...

it took some digging to find, but this is how it works:

when ever you drive within 5 miles of any MB dealer, your teleaid is able to receive a coded signal broadcast from the service department. This code instructs your teleaid to transmit all the information in your car to the dealer. this includes mileage, ECU information, current time and temperature, tire pressure, and because all 2003 models have a built in GPS RF transceiver built into the key, they can plot the last 500 miles you have traveled on a map. This information is uploaded to a central database and is shared with the Office Of Homeland Security, the FBI, INTERPOL, and your local police department. This information is also used by MB to send you service notifications and is forwarded to to direct mail ad agencies to better target products and services to you. didn't you ever wonder why your junk mail is ALL FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES??? that's why. makes you wonder...

hope this was helpful.

I must say it is sort of an infringement on your privacy if they are doing that all behind your back.

That's pretty much what I suspected, except you left out the part about the black surveillance helicopters.

Actually, Matt230K is a lot closer to the truth. The service guy said they do keep tabs on average mileage / use everytime you stop in. I had dropped by the service center after about three months of ownership, and they figured my mileage based on that. So it was just pure coincidence. How disappointing.

I'm sticking with yodelbenz' theory.
