Older W203 Tail Light Mod ( 4 dollars )

I'm pretty sure this has been posted before or even done by a member. Just thought i would post info about this.

I was tired of the ugly 1 light running light in the back.. So 4 dollars laterrr...

List
Auto zone Bulbs 5007LL 2 pack 3.99 + tax
2 X 3 inch of Electrical wire
4 X End caps

( Please make sure that both bottom bulbs are 5007LL )

WARNING NOTE: You will have to cut your fog light wire.. which means you will no longer have the 1 bright ugly light in the back when you fully pull out the knob.

Driver Side :

Cut the green wire NUMBER 1# ( Cut enough space so you can splice the wire open )
Cut the Grey n black Wire number 5# ( Cut enough space so you can splice the wire open )
Take one 3 inch wire connect 5# to 1# ( Use the end caps here )

Wire 5# is the power cable look in the picture.. You can see 3 wires are connected to wire 5#

The red cable is the new power for the fog light.. Connect this wire to wire 1# end cap it down.

Make sure the other end of wire 1# is tapped up with electrical tape.

The passenger side : is the same setup as the driver side look for the power in connector 5 and the other wire in 1

Its very easy anyone with half a brain can do this.. Took me 10 mins to do everything.~~No errors on the dash~~

Heres the outcome

Of course that's the whole idea behind a rear fog light, you know. Seems like a great way to ruin a properly running safety device, but as long as you're happy with it.

I agree, tommy. It's not extremely often that I use the rear fog but there are times in the early morning or around dusk on humid and foggy days that I do use it.

Then again, I have a newer W203 so this mod isn't for me. My tailights are already.

Well i got pulled over last week when i was down in downtown San Diego. I guess i forgot i had my fog light pulled out.. Cop said i only had 1 rear tail light.. so i was like wtf so i got out of my car and looked.. I had to beg the cop to tell him Mercedes comes like this from stock.. he looked at me like i was stupid or something.. but he told me i had to get it fixed.. i tried to look in the owners manual to see if there was anything on this.. but i couldn't find anything because my hands kept shaking =(... I hate cops down here badly I'm ready to movee..

Anyways i just wanted to post this for older w203 that don't care about a useless fog light that got me pulled over =(

Awesome mod!

Except Im a bit confused..so this mod basically switches on the rear fog light on both sides whenever the tail lamp is on..hence making it brighter?

It uses the power from the tail lights that are always on.. to power up the fog lights.. that are never on.. so yes making it fully light up would = it to be brighter hehe

It looks a lot brighter in the picture then in real life.. ill try to snap another one tonight

I found out that the older tail lights are frosted as well.. Not clear like the new ones

I convert mine to 2005+ and my rear fog works just fine.

easier way to do this is to just splice a wire into the foglight connector and run a dual filament bulb in it's place. instead of leaving the fog light non-functioning.

AND you could've just showed the cop how the head light switch works.

When I pull the light knob out 2 clicks for rear fog lights, I only have the rear 'fog' light on the driver side. Is this correct, or do I have a bulb out on the passenger side?

Also, Q on the '05+ conversion - is that a straight swap, or are wiring mods required?

Sounds like that cop was an idiot. Many European imports have a single rear fog light on the drivers side. I don't think there's any vehicle with rear fog lights on both sides?

I find it useful but only when necessary, otherwise driving around with it on just looks stupid. It's great if a friend is trying to follow you at night because it easily differentiates your car from the others on the highway.

I don't really understand the benefit of this mod, maybe if you can get better photos with them on vs off I'll get a better idea? Does it actually look better with them on or just brighter?

If the cop gave me a ticket for that I would have taken it to court and made a fool of him. Unless there's an American law against using rear fogs unnecessarily? I believe in Germany using front or rear fogs is illegal unless weather permits them. This is probably why you can't have the fog lights on in auto mode.

I stand corrected. Looks like some Audis also have both rear fogs.

The fog light on the benz is on the left side.. I always thought the 2005+ cars always had both areas on..

Ill take a picture after my HID install today i have to remove the whole front bumper for this install =P

it looks prettier.... but isn't the function behind only lighting one up to distinguish between someone breaking and their fog lights?

now it just looks like you're always breaking when your fogs are on...

Don't know what your talking about but the brake lights are liike 5X brighter.. If these are only 5 watt bulbs i don't see how a 21 watt bulb wouldn't be brighter

Its either 21 or 23 to lazy to look

Hooking up rear fog light.

Can some one explain how to do this (splice the wire and use a dual filament bulb). I would like to both of the rear fog lights connect. I never use the single because it looks so silly. I was thinking I would hook up the passenger side and use them only in extreme weather.

If there is an easier way please let me know.

You do not have a rear foglight wired to the passenger side. You can run the wire from the driverside under the carpet if you want. Instruction to rewire the 2005+ tail light is in the sticky of the forum. Same principle.

I must be getting old but I just don't undertand this. If you don't like that it has one fog on, why turn it on at all?
Why go through the work and hassle when you just don't have to use the feature?

Personally I like having it.
