Thunk / Clunk on moderate deceleration from rear (diff)??

Exclamation Thunk / Clunk on moderate deceleration from rear (diff)??

Still getting my car sorted
2002 C230K Coup a/t

90k on the vehicle

New front thrust arms, had a wicked boom on moderate to heavy braking in the front. All fixed.

Current issue - on moderate to heavy deceleration (braking) to a stop, I *sometimes* (say 25% of the time) get a boom/clunk/thump, single sound, from what feels like the differential.

I thought the diff might be leaking, I have since cleaned the housing and will be inspecting when I get a chance, but my question is, what else can I do/check?

It seems/feels like when it is probably shifting from 2nd to 1st, but I am very much feeling it from the rear of the vehicle.

The car does have a Valeo radiator, but I recently (2k) had the trans fluid drained and filled. Of course the jerks didn't save me a fluid sample as per my request... but I read the big test was a SLOW 1st second shift. No clunking/thumping/problems with shifting at all.

Help/Questions welcome.

Well it could be the diff. First think to check is the propshaft flex discs (265/270) & rear gearbox mounting. Then centre bearing & UJ.

Am I checking for play? Loose bolts? Do it by hand, or prybar? Look for leakage or wear? Ha, probably all of the above! Lastly, jackstands ok? should the rear wheels be down?

Look for play & cracks in flex discs - play in everything else. Be safe. Proper jackstands or ramps.

Also place car in neutral and try & rotate propshaft by hand & see if you can detect excessive lash in the diff.
