Question New vs. Used

Ok heres the thing....
I've been saving up for a new 230(planning on buying mid year)and have recently looked up used mercedes like the 240 kompressor. So, I want to know what your opions/past experiences are, and any advice for or against.

Thanks in advance

Sal, For me, I like the newer models (2001 and 2002) better in the C class. I think the redesign is a great impovement over the W202 version. However, to each his own really. You should check out, and maybe post this same question on the W202 board to get a different perspective.

Also, you say you were saving up for a 230 which is a brand spankin new model, unlike any other model from previous years.

Hey Sal, I was just trying to look up the retail value on the 99 you mentioned above (on www.kellybluebook.com). There's no 99 240 listed. There's a C230 (K), C280, and the C43.

Are you sure it's a 99 C240?

Also, FYI, A 99 C230K in good condition with about 36K Miles is listed for $23,225 which is less than the 2002 C230. Of course, this varies by location, and I did not put in any options other than standard.

I wouldn't buy a used car. You never know how it was treated. Pick a budget and buy the best car within that budget. Then go enjoy it.

C230 C-Coupe
E-bay currently has a bid on a used black c230 Coupe. Some great pictures.

I've ordered black, Oyster leather, auto and C2 so I personally think the picture are excellent.

If you are thinking coupe and used this might be the deal?

I have to agree with Kwik. You never know what the previous owner did with the car. Is it being sold because its a lemon, it was abused or traded for something else. The truth is out there.

I would buy a Starmark vehicle

used cars today are very different than they were 10 or even 5 yrs ago. Most have low mileage and are dealer maintained so they are in very good condition. I would definately get one used. I have had good luck on two occassions with used cars other than MB so I am not sour to the used car thing. Like anything else, you may get a bad one. From the looks of things on these various boards, if you get a new one you may get a bad one too. only kidding

I would trust cars the starmark program because of the warranty, but i'd be skeptical from buying used from a private party. IMO, buy new within your budget. There is some intrinsic value to being the only person who's driven your car.

Be aware that a used car will have a higher interest rate on a loan and/or lease.

new vs. used

Even new cars have been driven by many other people. Indeed, some of these cars have been badly abused during loading and unloading onto ships, trucks and rail cars.

I remember reading a British person's account of being on the industrial docks in Calais, France, watching new 130 HP Peugeot 205 GTIs being reloaded from trains to ships. The drivers were about 18 years old. They'd start the car and do cold engine redline burnouts as the cars were being driven towards the ship. Nice.

Used cars are always better value than new ones, at least for marques with normal depreciation. It's probably true for M-B too, but not in BC, where M-B Canada sews up the used car market and over-charges everyone. Then buying a new one can make sense. The key with any used car is - make sure there's a year or two of factory warranty left. You'll be OK then.

if you order your car, there is little chance of someone taking it out for a spin, if you make sure to specify this.

god knows how someone drove that lease return car on the lot, even with a warranty. and who wants a car that someone else owned first???

god only knows what that person did inside their car.... yuck, the possibilities are endless

buy new
