Synpower is at the very least certainly equal or better than M1. M1 was reformulated in 06 and the base stock was downgraded from Group IV to Group III. M1 is still a good oil but the competition has caught up.

#2, in the thread you linked to, and in the article they quoted, they are comparing Synpower to M1 5w-30, not M1 0w-40. M1 0w-40 is the ONLY oil in that specific weight that is 229.5 approved.

M1 0W-40 Euro Formulation has not changed. They would have to reapprove it if they did. Benz approvals are formulation specific inclusive of base fluid.
M1 5W-30 does not pass HTHS ((high temperature, high shear) and is not approved by Benz - See my Definitive thread.
This subject has been covered before & people can't read.
However the 5W-40 Synpower is 229.3 and 229.5 approved. I just mentioned it as another option to Mobil 1 0W-40 for warmer climates where you don't need the extreme low viscosity of a 0 weight. Even in colder climate of Canada my previous non corporate dealer used the Synpower 5W-40.

Or Valvoline Synpower 5W-40 if you're not in a very cold climate as it sports 229.5. UOA at Bob is the oil guy show the new Synpower formulation to be somewhat superior to Mobil 1. (not the EP)
